Uglies are ackward pieces that don't stack well. Sometimes they are short as well. See shorties.

Punkies are partial rotted pieces, they have gone "punk" or "punky."

Uglies are mis-shaped pieces of wood odd sizes & don't stack or split well
Can't get much wood in the stove with them , more air space between them
I stacked mine by the outdoor fire pit, fire pit wood sometimes I bring some in for shoulder season (day fires)
This years ugly stack or stack of uglies:

    Punkies , for me,
are the centers of some of the birch rounds that's almost rotten wood , punky, soft & wet , but still has some burning value.
Garbage wood usually , but I dry it & burn it in the fire pit with the uglies.
