Yup I thought so too. Several others on here have one & are pleased with it. Hand forged by Hults Bruks for Husqvarna, head weighs 2500 grams (around 5.5 pounds). Thought about a Granfors Bruks or Wetterlings maul, but didn't want to go that much.

For the difference I can get another vintage saw project, some more saw parts or something else for my shop.

Good way of thinking. I don't need the fanciest or most expensive, it's the quality.

    Well,
I ended up getting the Stihl branded Oxhead (Oschenkopf). It was cheaper at the local hardware than anywhere online. After watching some videos with the X27, I noticed it got stuck a lot more than I am used to with my splitting mauls. I have only swung it a few times so the jury is still out. An extra factor is that I started bucking my logs longer now that I am cutting for my Ideal Steel. I will need to go toe to toe with my somewhat broken Collins Maul and see which is better. I hope I didn't spend 2-3 times the price for something that may not work as well..... I might have to borrow a friend's X27 and do a comparison.

I sometimes cannot split wood that is too long like you said. I don't think it's the maul. Probably my lack of swing. :emb: :axe:

Is the handle on your old maul(s) not replaceable? You seem to be happy with the way they were and have been performing. This would be a simple and cheapest fix to your situation.

It should be. Post a pic of the eye if you get a chance.

A company in Austria called Muller makes a high quality splitting maul in six different weights, from 2kg (4.4lb.) to 5kg (11lb.) in head weight; this variety should cater to the requirements of most people.
    They are worth a look.
