I have a husqvarna maul made by Hults Bruks, fiskars x27, fiskars original super splitting axe, and an old Warren splitting maul.

My favorite is the husky maul, my most used is the x27.

looking at the professional one, the ROTBAND system, 6.6 lbs head and 35" handle. The PA-80? did not have the same head attachment nor over-strike protection.

No, it's it has the same head, just the old handle style. You can swap out for the rotband handle if desired.

I am thinking about a maul also. Looked at the ochsenkopf, the ox635H. I like the idea of the weight but the handle seems long. All the other mauls, GB, Wetterling are 31.5"

I'm a big fan of the X27 too and recommend them to others, however if you are/were happy with the mauls you already have, why not drill out the heads and replace the handles?

You could find a pa80. Same head as ox635 but with a 31.5 handle.

If you can't let me know. Since I don't really use mine much anymore I'd consider parting with it.

I've seen these around at auctions. Never tried one though. I thought they were just a gimmick. Just youtubed it and it looks like it works well. Might have to pick one up if I can get it cheap.

Oh boy...Now I have a new expensive tool to lust after.

I still want one of those triangle shaped 20 lb mauls that have been mentioned. I forget the brand. Just lift and drop and it goes through anything.

I still like the Gransfors, but more because it's like a high end car in some ways, and I can't afford a high end car. An axe is within reach for me.

I have one of the original Sotz Monster Mauls, the company went under years ago.Had it 34 years, was 15lbs total weight when new, after repairing/reinforcing/replacing the handle (long story) several years ago it now weighs 20lbs.

All kinds of knock offs out there, several different brands since the original patent long expired. I rarely use it more than 5-6 times yearly now,its almost too heavy for me now.But I will say it has NEVER gotten stuck in anything.Period.If it wouldn't split the log or chunk (which was rare) it just bounced off. Cant say that about any other of my mauls, axes, wedges.Even the high dollar European twisted steel ones (which are awesome) I managed to get stuck in some especially gnarly large knotty Silver Maple when not using a pair at the same time. Not the wedge's fault however,I learned my lesson there. :emb:

I don't have a lot of experience with the monster maul, but my newer one seems to have to short of a handle. I also ground the blade down some. I got a twist wedge from a neighbor and man its awesome. Also picked up a package deal at the local hardware store with one in it. It was a fiberglass handle 8 lb maul, the twist wedge, tool bag, gloves, glasses and a cloth log carrier for 59 bucks. I thought that was a pretty good deal.
