    I can imagine some social service nanny would put us all in a nursing home because "you can't heat with wood, you'll freeze"

    Medical staff doesn't like to hear about the exertion expended while you're supposed to be in recovery. If you think about it, it's the same advice we have given hurting/injured memebers for years.

    Example:

    "I sprained my shoulder"..... "Make sure to take it easy and forget about the wood pile until you are better"....

    Well, one is safety concerns with a brain injury and the other is flickering flames messing with optic nerve damage...but I have a Fisher Baby Bear with a solid door so not really an issue. I get the general idea of safety, may sound odd, but when you forget things it's possible to not remember to close the door or monitor air control. So it's a fair concern. I have a large print 'check list' I go through with using the wood stove and a special timer to check the damper etc. Been around stoves my whole life and then once I split my head open things are a bit more challenging.
