I’d seen someone mention the sand in the ash box before but couldn’t find it again, might have been you. I’m definitely willing to give it a shot. I work for a sand and gravel outfit, so getting plenty of clean sand won’t be a problem. I’ll send you a pm soon and get more details.

I've had my Mansfield for quite sometime. If I had to do it again I would get the stove without the ash tray just a solid bottom. However I got the sand from the beach and fill that tray to the max.Worked just fine.

Do they make a block-off plate you can install to help? Perhaps a flat piece of 1/4" steel, weld a bolt to the bottom side and drop in place. Then a second plate with a hole in center, drop the threaded part of the bolt through the hole and tighten up a nut. You may elect to use some gasket or furnace cement to seal the plate on the inside.

    Just a thought.

Some of the comments about the side load door and the inability to fix issues is really disheartening. And I saw a YouTube video with a hearthstone Manchester (the model I’d get if I go hearthstone) side load door inner plate warping repeatedly on a guy.

Man that sucks. Maybe this is karma telling me to just get Jotul v3 Oslo 500. Stick with what you know…

Nate from the beginning you were thinking too small going with the Manchester for 2800 sq ft.You'll need the largest Hearthstone to handle your heat load.Even if you go with another brand go for the largest model. Now all this side door warping I've never experienced.I've had the old Hearthstone 2 which burned coal and wood which functioned well for many years. No side door issues and I now burn the Hearthstone One which is a monster with no side door issues or warping.Anyway go large.

Or forget about looks and go straight for function and buy plenty of stove to heat the place WITHOUT over working the stove.

DS Energymax 160 with secondary air tubes and a thermostat. Not quite as good on wood as a CAT stove but decent and the ability to burn anthracite nut coal as well.

I should probably clarify the issues with the Hearthstone side door . What happens is the latch causes the side door frame ( which the latch secures itself to) to wear out over time . Hearthstone knows this and made a “ replaceable “ plate for the front door issues but nothing for the side door . I always load using the side door and it’s wearing out again and the stove will need the entire side side door frame replaced which is a tear down . This makes no sense in my mind because the door frames for the front and the side are the same just different sizes .

The Jotul F55 is a steel stove with a cast iron cladding that is supposed to make the heat less intense.

Geoff, yes I like the Jotul F55 a lot. But I honestly forgot about it… glad you put that back in my mind. I need to look into a couple dealers because the one I was going to go with for the hearthstone does not carry Jotul.

I’ll have to pull up some old Tim the wood stove guy Jotul YouTube videos and see if the wife likes the carabasset.

The only negative with the F55… I don’t think it qualifies for the 26% tax credit that’s being offered this year.
