Yesterday, the War Department lit one to take the curse off. And again today. Single shots each.

Burning smalls and uglies last two nights just to take the damp out, mid 40s no overnight burns yet.

Ready to migrate to the "What'cha burning?" thread now. No solar gain yesterday, and highs in the 40s today - fired it up this morning with a few pine splits to get the house warmed up for the day. It was great to sit by the stove early this morning with my coffee and actually make money while doing so. New gig lets me work from home at least once a week - I may just relocate my office setup downstairs next to the stove for winter. ;)

I'd like to mention while I'm here about how happy we are at this time of year to have a stove indoors instead of running the owb. I only needed to kick the house up a few degrees - so much easier to do with the IS than loading the boiler and heating a full load of water before the place warms up. We definitely miss the super hot showers, but I'd make the switch again in a cocaine heartbeat! It was a great heating appliance, but we enjoy the stove more and won't be without one again.

Ideal setup would be an owb in its own building with wood storage, a few hot water holding tanks, and radiant floor heat with a small stove in the living area. Some day. :)

That would certainly be in ideal setup, and what I'd love to have here as well.

Ok, well it's supposed to get into the 30's tonight, so there's this.

First fire for us this season happened this AM. Heavy frost, too.

Hard to believe, because it was in the 90s just over a day ago......lol

Actually second fire. Did a small burn a few weeks ago to get any moisture out of the soapstone.
Burning tulip and Catalpa. It makes heat but dang every time you turn around the fire has burnt out and no coals.

Yep, that's characteristic of those species.

Good heat though, just short fires and absolutely no coaling.

Yep, burned a lot of it last year.
It’s just so weird in a soapstone. By the time the stove temps are going down the wood is long gone :)

Was mid 40s and windy this morning. I thought house was comfy. Boss Lady said it was chilly. I turned furnace on just to be sure it would light. Ran it for 15 minutes.
Came back from taking son to game and said Im thinking of starting a fire.
Boss said, "about time, its cold!"

Comments like this make me question my choice of life partners:jaw:

Not really, she's a keeper . She just likes bedrooms at 60:eek:

I like the bedroom a bit cooler too. Granted, our BR is all on the same floor ( open concept ranch) and on the far end of the house from where the stove is, so it's easy to keep that room a bit cooler. Your place probably has a lot of heat rising to the BR from the stove on the lower lower lower level, right?

Our bedroom is colder than rest of house. Its second level, farthest from woodstove. Hallway seems to choke the heat. The duct work was never hooked up to the HVAC system for the room, until I discovered it wasnt this summer.
I like the bedroom colder, just not ice on walls around windows like I had growing up.

Planning for tomorrow night for a small fire. Boss lady has been hinting for the last week. She's the one that likes cooler temperatures. I've just been pushing my limits to see how long I can go. I could go longer, but I know the room would get much colder than the temp if I did.
