Started my wood harvest this year in early February. I try to gather a lot this time of year, pile it in driveway and when the ground firms up in May start splitting & stacking. Most of this from the give-back area of the town lawn yard waste dump-off area. The town also dumps their cut trees here too. I try to stop by there every weekend and see what’s available. Sometime it’s christmas, other times the area is empty. I mostly cut to split-sized rounds at the dump, less sawdust mess at home. Side-note... today there were two guys there with a Alaska chainsaw mill cuttings some lovely English Walnut boards from a log. Interesting - I always wanted to see one of those in action. My pile so far is 5x7x15 (about 4 cords worth) ~60% Ash, 30% Silver Maple and the rest - dunno but some type of hardwood. Ash is mosly buried - so it you see the Maple. First pic is today’s haul - mostly Silver Maple that was already cut into good stove sized rounds (bonus). Buried under that are some pieces of some Red Maple from a 24” trunk I bucked up then cut into quarters so I could safely lift them into the truck. Second pic is the pile to date. 4 cords is about what I burn in a year. This will be for winter season 2019-2020.
Nice good effort and result of scrounge hoarding! The nice thing about that deal is that the wood is brought to one location for you to go to. I wish our town had a wood dump portion. They don't allow any wood to be brought in. But they'll take steel, aluminum, etc.
Nice hoard Gpsfool No tree dumping here either at our collection centers. But we do have a brush/cleanup dump, just can’t go there to pick any....
I was sick last weekend so no hoarding. Back on my feet now - went after a newly posted Craigslist ad for Ash at the curb. Two guys already there when I arrived - . Decided to swing by the town dump on the way home - it’s been empty lately - but (Woo-Hoo) did I score there today - a truck load of Black Locust - cut into the right length rounds already! I had to cut each in half so I could lift em into the truck.
