So I hand split a 12' locust. In the end I got 7 rails. Three are roughly board shaped the others are odd, sorta kinda triangular. I can probably split down the largest ones into useful beams. I'd like to use them as the frame to a rustic wood and tool shed so posts of about 6" should work. Think any further splitting and shaping I will do with a circular saw and more chain sawing so I can control what I end up with better. Would this be better to do green or wait till they dry some?
I'd get the boards to the general shape/dimension you want before they dry, leave a little wiggle room for shrinkage while drying Got any pics? Also, how'd you split the logs?
OK I'll try and get to them sooner than later. Not too worried about dimensions just want them to have enough square edges that I can fasten them together without big gaps. Split them with a wedge, a maul and a sledge hammer. I have had better logs in the past that I cut for wood. This one had a branch on each end or the rails would've been even straighter. I should be able to work with them. I was thinking about taking pics the whole time but didn't happen. I can take a shot manana.
This is what I have to work with. They are 10' 3" except the lone one that is 12'. Oh and a shot of some rounds I need to split.
