For me it's because I have a small house....very small and I have worked hard at insulating and sealing out drafts.
Also, I found that if you name each of your splits in the stack you are less likely to burn them unless it's absolutely necessary.

"Fred, I'm sorry but it's time to go. I know we've have a good time together since you were split and stacked but I've got to do this"
The hardest part is coming up with unique names for each one! :)

Oh cripes, I think working late tonight is getting to me.

Since air-sealing and re-insulating the attics, I burn half as much from just two years ago. Just about 2 cords...maybe

3+, but hard to tell this year. Burned what was leftover from last year, brought some more wood up to the woodshed, burned some of that, brought up some more, burned some of that, then finally filled the woodshed in early December. Emptied one metal trash can of ashes two weeks ago.

Burned maybe a bit ovef a cord so far. Beefing up the attic insulation from R-15 to R-45 helped alot. Mostly white oak left now.

I just added all mine up. I'm at 2.4 cords not including shoulder wood. A cold November and a couple nasty cold snaps have us using more than predicted. I'm still ok with it, my gas bill last month was $38. :)

Missing about 1 1/2-1/2/3 cords out of my racks. 1 cord of soft maple, 1/3 cord of ash the rest was a white oak/BL mix. I did burn maybe a "face" cord of shorts and uglies of soft maple at the beginning of the season but that is hard to calculate.

So we'll keep it easy and say 2 cord. :)

I'm at about 2.5 cords so far. Mostly Hickory and Cherry. It's been in the mid 30's during the days here for a week or more. It's really cut down on the wood used.

I need to do the same. Did you remove the old insulation or just go over it ?

Until about Christmas got through by burning about a face cord of real uglies, as well as the small branches from the tops of the trees I took down late last winter (maple, two small ash, and one beech, one hickory). Still have a face cord of uglies for the Spring, and tons of branches, so I'll probably stop burning from my stacks earlier than usual as well, just to help with the clean up. Of my stacks (started around 12/25) have only burned about 3/5 cord. Expect that cord to last me until early February. Putting in a flue damper has cut down considerably on wood consumption as well as put more heat per unit of wood into the house. Unless we have a very late Spring, I expect to get through the winter using only 2 cords from my stacks.

Just go over it. Can rent blower when you buy product from hardware store. Also could have local insulation company install it. Worth every penny.

About a face cord in the stove inside - cherry, oak

Lowes is the same....I blew 50 bags in before winter, a lot more comfortable in here this winter. I'm going to have to do some measuring before I can even respond to usage, been burning off of 3 different stacks.
