Split some bigger stuff today and had to put the splitter in vertical mode. I split the rounds into quarters so I can lift them then put the splitter horizontal and finished splitting.
Of course, there are those who will ask why you didn't just finish them vertical. The way the round was shaped it looks like you broke it's heart. Could be my twisted mind though.
I'll also ask. Why did you not split the entire thing the way you had the splitter set up? Seems like wasted motion. The only time it seems right to put the splitter into horizontal mode is when you are putting it away in the barn.
Right on! That is the easiest way to get wood split; vertically. The same way that God grows it; vertically.
Bigguns are perfect for noodling, that way you don't have to mess with changing the way the manufacturer set up the splitter to be run (as its bought).
I'll let you do the noodling Jason. In all my years I still have not done any. Don't expect to either.
No problem! I enjoy the chainsaw aspect of firewood pretty much the most (aside from snubbing the oil man). So the more trigger time, the better.
Personally, I work slower when the saw is vertical. I can manipulate the rounds easier to get the splits how I want them when its horizontal. If they are heavy, I will flip the splitter up, halve everything, then put it back down. Only takes 20 seconds total.
Sounds like you split vertical all the time. I split horizontal and only do vertical for really big stuff I can't lift. I just roll the big stuff to the splitter and make them smaller. In this case the tree was 80 metres tall and only the base end for 10 metres had to be done vertical.
I agree and do it the same way. Get them small enough to lift on the splitter. No right/wrong way to do it. You go Mark.
