Now to figure out what to do with it. Should I go on a scrounge or split & stack what I found last week. While SWMBO loves wood heat she does not want it to take over her yard. Splitting & stacking wins.

I split by hand and below is about 2 hours of work. Some red oak and something that I had to fight with to split. The wood that gave be trouble has thick, white pulp wood and dark brown heart wood....

Today's work is the stack near us from the deck support to the end. Near the post it is almost 7' high. At least now it is under the deck and out of her way...

Sounds like your trouble wood may be hickory or walnut, though walnut IME is usually easy to split by hand...care to post some pics? We're a visual lot you know?

I'm guessing that it is bitternut hickory. The image I found matches the bark, coloration, & stringiness.

Looks like a hickory to me, although we have no bitternut hickory here, just shag.

I see a lot of pig and mockernut here. The younger ones can have smooth bark, they become more recognizable as they mature.

Is it bitter or does it taste like butter? Thank you Horkn for the validation...it takes a village you know to contain that mind...or even minimally understand it...

Eric is the terroir tester of the wood.

Smelling is the gateway drug to tasting.

It's OK, we'll start a 12 step thread to help you out when you admit you need help.
