Ive probably got 20 to 25 years of craftsman hand tools and a few older power tools. This should be a neat group to join. Hopefully Stanley will bring the quality back up again.
this will be my vise table base if I ever get it done. It's a forging that was rejected for being off center. 2800+ pounds.
2800 pounds!!!! I think your aaalllll set for a vice stand! (providing the wind doesn't take it away)
A friend of mine worked at the forge and he heard they were going to scrap it. Told me to come and get it right away. I showed up with a well used 1/2 ton pick up......and prayed all the way home.
That's just a gooble image. I've always wanted a Wilton bullet. Here's my monster, C. Parker #978. It's just sitting there un mounted, it needs the brother of your reject forging.
Im going to piggy back my project in this thread since we are talking vise stands. We had a nice day here, so I took out my vise stand and worked up the removable side welding shelf. The old table saw extension was not cast iron, but decent steel that threw good sparks. Two notches were made and some C channel welded up to the underside of it. Square tube was welded to each side of the pedestal for the channel to slide onto. I wasn't able to be any welds on the top of the channel under the table top, but I did the ends of the tube and it feels solid. I reset the vise to the edge so the static jaw was just beyond the edge of the table so long pieces can be held vertically in the vise. Three holes drilled for bolts, one drilled and tapped as it was in the middle of the pedestal and could not get a bolt on underneath. The shelf slides right onto the tubes and meets up tight and level to the top of the table. I may put a pin through the channel and tubes as a keeper, but it is tight for now. The table usually has my small propane forge on it and there is little room for anything else, so this is great. I don't have much space in the shop area for a larger table.
Now that turned out sweet Jon! Wilton vise and all... curious can you still get replaceable jaw grips for those vises?
I believe Wilton sells replacements but I don't know how far back they go. There is a vise collectors page on Facebook with a member that makes custom jaws for a reasonable price.
