Took the cameras down today. Very little activity. Our border patrol (Max) is too conscientious. How long do you set your videos? I'll put the Enkeeo on the 6 volt battery and set it on video. I may put it further away where Max doesn't run as much.
I usually run 10 or 20 second videos. Most times 10 second is enough but sometimes, because of deer activity we'll run 20 second because we have so many deer and love to watch them especially during the rut and also watching the young grow.
What software are you using to separate pictures out of videos? It would be nice to get some pics from them. We used to have a lot of deer but this area has been hunted out badly. I wished they would leave them alone for a while. They killed all the quail and most of the Turkey as well. Of course ever since Max made himself at home with us only the bravest creatures venture close anymore. We love Max a lot but miss seeing the wildlife.
Mouse or rat chewed through one of the camera straps and scratched up the camera. Does anybody use rat guards?
A dogs scent will keep most of the critters a few hundred yards further away. If you want a cam that the critters don't react to near as much, you need a black flash cam, with the fastest trigger speed your budget allows. Even then, they hear the click of the cam and the smart ones learn to avoid it. In the game camera world, you can have cheap, fast, and good. But you can only pick 2.
I simply stop the video and use the "Prt Screen" on the keyboard. Then you can use any picture software you have. We too loved our yellow lab until he suddenly turned ornery and got lead poisoning. Have not had a dog since but lots and lots of deer.
I had that problem when we first started using them as did just about everyone around here. Now 95% of the time they don't even look at them. So I wonder if they just eventually get used to them. This past year (I put the cameras out usually from Memorial Day through mid November) it was a rare occurrence to have one afraid of the camera. I think perhaps it is maybe a stray deer that is not used to coming around here but I could be wrong on that. Deer are a strange creature in that it takes very little for them to be afraid. One can even make funnies out of that. For example, deer love fruit. Yet, put a pumpkin or a watermelon or something like that out and it can take up to a week or longer before they will start eating. I even put out some sweet corn several years back. It took about 10 days for them to start eating and then they went wild. Once with a watermelon we laughed at pictures of them being curious but afraid to go near them. But, they finally got to it and in short order they ate it all.
I mostly agree with that. All my cameras are no-flash and I like them. On the dogs, that may or may not be true. I think in most cases it is true except for the dogs that are close. We've had neighbor dogs chased by deer up to the house. Right across the road the neighbors have a great dane. Dog and deer were nose to nose recently. Dog seemed more afraid than the deer. I also have had numerous pictures of where a dog went through and deer paid no attention to the scent. Same thing with coyotes. People talk about how bad the yotes are with the deer but here the deer don't seem to pay much mind to them. Yet, I don't doubt that they do get a few fawns every summer.
Thanks for all the help. Mine have a night IR flash. Maybe next Christmas, can't spend anymore now. The pack rats here don't mind dogs, they seem to be all over the place. Max tries to catch them but he would have more success if he was a Dachshund or small Terrier. With deer and coyote he stays at a distance and barks at them, he won't actually mess with them. The deer don't seem to care. He has his own ideas on who should or shouldn't come on the property. He is friendly with other dogs but some he really doesn't want here and he escorts them off to where they came from. He doesn't bark at them just kind of herds them. Other times he brings them home, like little Pippa, she arrived a year ago Christmas on a very cold day. A big old hound is also tolerated, he comes and visits for a snack. He belongs to a neighbor and doesn't have very long to live. He has bone cancer in his bottom jaw and the vet is giving him about 3 months. He is such a sweet boy. Possum, Rabbit, Armadillo, Skunk ( especially cherished by me when he comes home) and similar critters are unfortunately on his dinner menu, the rats he will not eat. I doubt the coyotes have much impact on the deer here. Mountain lions on the other hand might. We had one here for a while but i haven't heard or seen her in over a year and those girls can be quite vocal when in heat. We'll see how the cameras do in a less patrolled area. I'll let you know.
Sorry lucy i haven't been on in a while. As of right now you can only buy them direct from UltraproX.com. I currently have three of them and they're working great! ttps://www.ultraprox.com/shop-now/WINTER-SUPER-SALE-c25743451
Years ago we got dad a trail cam. It worked ok till those tiny pizz ants got in through the weep hole in the bottom of the door gasket. They made a small mud nest behind the circuit board and ruined it. . Anybody else ever have that problem ? Maybe a small piece of steel wool would have prevented that, but who knew Luckily it was a cheap cam!
Hi Lucy, Does your game camera use an SD card? I was told a few years ago that the class cards can malfunction with alot of video and that class 10 cards do much better.
