Got some oak & cherry split, big white oak coming down tomorrow

Split up some willow oak and cherry I had in rounds from a neighbors fence line.
Oak is in the taller stack, cherry under the tin. And a few shots of the rest of the oak for coming years, and of course the chipmunk police

 

This White oak in front of the house should be on the ground early tomorrow - before it falls on the house hopefully.
It's pretty large but the tap root is gone, and the impending strong storms tomorrow afternoon - Tuesday lit a fire under my azz to get it taken care of.

That's a nice stack of oak and cherry! The rest of your wood looks like it's drying pretty well for you.

Curious how you know that white oak needs to come down?

 

I have been on the fence about taking it down, but when I was re-mulching the garden beds I noticed the bark on the house side at the base was flaking in a compression.
The opposite side a piece of bark came off and exposed the tap root which I could drive a rod all the way across.

 

It's on the ground, a Stihl 200T in the tree and a Husky 3120xp on the ground

Yep, good opportunity to try out those processing methods.
Personally, I think a hop, skip, then the jump is the way to go..........but that's just MHO.

I didn't take it down - hired this one out...$400 is cheaper than the time it'd take me to drop it top down, as there was no where to put it down whole. Pool on one side, house on the other, septic/leach field, and multiple strong oaks & hickory. The crown would have destroyed and hung up in every tree in the area. The main trunk was solid 2' above ground roots were the main concern.
Kicking myself in the tail for not having it dropped in the winter - it's hard to discern the limbs amongst the leaves. The little Stihl 170 is a nice limber with a fresh chain

 

I worked at it a bit today and decided to retire early as the skies were getting black sounds like the worst is coming through 2400-0600
Doesn't appear like I got anything done...but this is the pain staking part - pulling limbs, cutting a bit, moving firewood sized limbs/logs.
I'll get it cleaned up and C/S/S in a few days

 

Cool, what was the diameter of that oak.
Going to be some primo fire wood for sure.
I have another dead ash by the house with a slight lean towards the house, I'm having a guy come drop it into the woods for me

 

I'll take some measurements but it's at least 24" DBH. Plan on counting the rings to check age as well

 

Peace of mind now though.
Good to not have to worry about it,
especially with the weather that's headed your way.
