    x3 - Welcome !

Next items on the list: Good surge protector for the stove to plug into,

    * Good Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector by the stove, such as:

    * This, and making sure all Fire/Smoke detectors are operating properly (like we would do when using -any- wood burning appliance) should be the next priority. Just good common sense.

    Congrats on the new stove!

Thanks for noticing that. He did see it too. Sucks! We will probably end up taking everything apart and reconnecting them all.

    used pipe = mistake
    duravent = (IMHO) mistake

we have learned through long and hard experience that used pipe tends to lead to leakage......and another trip back to someones house to "fix" leaks costs money and time....

yea, its a cheaper product, so many pipe dealers choose it, but they usually aren't held liable for leakage.....the guy at HD who sold you the pipe isn't going to have to drive to your place to fix leaks......he's going to point you to RTV or foil tape. Duravent aside, I don't recommend used pipe!

I have used different brands of pipe...and the DV was a leaker.

The foil tape is fast and can be removed quick with a heat gun if need be...
I installed the big Whit back in 2010 IIRC and felt all smug about the install

Tossed a fire in the beast and within a very short time it was like Smokey Joe's camp out in the house...

    Arrrrrrrgh
I flipped off the lights and grabbed my laser pointer (Red) and scanned the pipe and OMG every joint was seeping wisps of smoke.

Got a roll of the silver tape and wrapped them up.

    All good.

Using silicone on the joints is a PITA and a real beotch to get things loose later if need be.

I installed a square flange'd disconnect at the stove to allow removal if I need to.

We have enough room behind the stove to get around it and work on things, so no biggy..

The tape could be painted black/ or?? if you wanted to after install.

The DV is not the best stuff on the shelf, but is safe enough and as long as you know what you need to do you are good to go with it.

When I installed my Baby back in 2007 I used DV. Not one leak from that day until I pulled the stove 2 weeks ago. I put a smear of high temp silicone on each joint. I wondered what all the fuss was about. Well, after taking it all apart and reconfiguring the venting for the Accentra, I had multiple leaks. Did I put a smear of silicone at each joint? No. Darn. I ended up siliconing each joint on the outside and then painting it. I was pretty happy with the results. Laser pointer showed no leaks. Cool. However when the stove shuts down and cools off and again at initial start up, I get a whiff of smoke smell. Back to the laser. I found that it's leaking at the adapter. I did put a line of silicone there but seeing as the fitting is steel it must expand and contract. I think I need a better clamp.
I agree with Snowy. The laser pointer works great and any leak you find can be sealed.. There is better piping on the market but the price is easily double of the DV from what I saw. You get what you pay for just be ready to seal the leaks!

I have one stove with the pipe that has the high temp silicone O RINGS and it leaked a bit too.

    SILVER TAPE ...

A stove with a tall chimney and a good natural draft is less likely to leak due to the natural negative pressure in the pipe.

Direct vent systems (All of ours) are more prone to leaks due to the positive pressure vent.

My point being that you should not have to tape and seal all the joints....a quality pipe wont leak. "All pipe leaks.." is inaccurate......THAT pipe leaks is accurate.

From what I'm reading, the pipe was new from HD. If the carton from the DuraVent install kit was damaged, or the pipe inside the carton was damaged, the OP should have returned it for a new one, or at least a replacement of that particular part.

I always recommend 4” diameter Duravent Pro Venting. With 4” there is a lot less pressure on the seams so you do not have as much trouble with that!
