Spent a week casually breaking down and moving the rounds. And just rolling the bigger, punkier stuff. The biggest piece was 24" diameter where it split into 2 trunks, a few in the 16"-18" range. Tough when your saw is only a 16" bar and it's just you and a wheel barrow. I'll split and stack at a leisurely pace for the next few weeks. I'll probably get a solid cord of good wood out of this, with another 1/4-1/2 of punky wood that I'll help decompose quickly in the trees. So if you're considering it, be prepared to get some pretty big stuff since you can't specify a size limit. Well, what I would consider big stuff. I'm sure for many of you 24" is child's play.
16" should be fine. I did some fine work with a 14" Makita cordless before I scored the Stihl 028 that I restored. I'd take the punky stuff straight to the dump...but it's nice to get a drop! I love maple.
Nope. Not this time. I think as soon as I clear it out, I will probably sign up again for just logs. But I also have that BL I need to process too! And, my woodshed is already full!!
Can you leave the BL for the Winter to fell? How loose is the bark? Debark it somewhat now. Once barkless it gets "denser" from my observations. Fell it and leave in the woods. The bark will loosen up nicely over the Summer. Remove bark in early Fall and then buck in December. You'll have some primo barkless wood.
That does sound good but I am not very good at waiting. If I fell those trees, I am going to want to buck them split them and stack them too.
Can you SS in the woods until room opens up in your stacks? I do that here in my woods. Have over two cord of red oak, ash and basswood drying in there as i type.
My woodshed is really just a frame with a lid on it. I plan to expand very soon which will add another 4ish cords. I can just stack it next to that as the wood comes around.
The clear panels are really working well. They get the wood super hot and the top pieces are already dry as a bone after 3 weeks. I am hoping that i can cut drying time down to 1 summer max. Let's see!
If it didn't have a slant, it would hold exactly 4 cords. I took off about 7 inches on one side for the slant so it holds a little less than 4 cords.
