I'm presuming if she is going there for training that she'll be in a commercial/office area. Not far from those areas are hotels and restaurants. I doubt she'll be hanging out at 8 Mile and DeQuindre.

I've spent more than my fair share of time on the road, in airplanes, hotels, you name it all around the country. As is usually the case, if you mind your own business, 99% of the time you'll be fine.

Downtown near the GM building is nice. You generally get a feel quickly for areas. I don't think you have much to worry about if you use your head.

I hate Milwaukee too! If it wasn't for the Brewers I would never set foot in that city.

    Hehehe… you are a country girl ! :)
I haven't met many folks who grew up in the country/rural areas, who enjoy going into the cities. Not my idea of fun… but we always seem to survive it OK.

I lived in a very small town, 2 bars a church and a gas station (typical wi small town) for about a year and could not stand it. I need to be in the country, not that I don't like people, I just don't want them living right next to me ;)

You sure we're not related?

Since 1978, I've been able to talk my wife into living 1/2 hour out of town… everywhere we've moved. And, she has grown to like it as much as I have too. She grew up in a Maine mill town where the houses were literally feet from each other, so it was an adjustment for her at first. Not now. Yup, country living is perfect and, thankfully, not so for most. The rest can have their urban utopia all to themselves…

Right where I want to be.
Find out where this training is, and get back to us with the info.
Lots of us can give ideas once you do that.
Detroit is a big place and sprawls out. I lived in Lincoln Park, which is south of Detroit a bit, and anything north of there (which was Detroit) looked like all of a sudden no one really gave a crap. I know that's not completely true, but sure looked like it.
    Almost night and day.
I've also lived in SW Detroit, and NW Detroit. Wouldn't go back to either of those areas now, but every neighborhood is it's own little microcosm. There are a lot of them.
Don't let the name or stories, scare you from going.

Detroit is a sad story. Similar to Gary, IN which is not far from where I grew up. Industrial area that booms and then sheds lots of jobs. The middle class flees and the ghetto expands. It's too bad to see it, but it happens. Detroit would clean itself up quickly if manufacturing jobs would come back. Then again, the idiots that run our country insisted on NAFTA 20 years ago and ensured that would never happen.

    Jobs won't come back. Period.

People in this country have moved to a service industry. And most can't afford to buy american. Why do I buy Chinese e stuff cause I can get more for my money.

Why do people buy poulans instead of hisqvarna or stihl cause they may not have the cash. You can get a 40cc poulan for less than $200 new, the same stihl is double that.

I would like them to return but they won't, the economy can't support it.

To many people have a service and nothing really to sell.

Not to derail the thread as the O.P. has genuine concerns about her travel. I would say one thing about this new Walmart economy though. I see it like this....the elite have offshored labor, but have they really lowered prices on goods ignoring electronics? It seems to me that stuff still costs the same or more, but the margins they are making have increased since they are paying 30 cents an hour for the sweatshop worker. The consumer has no job now and prices are still where they always were. A screw job. :(

    Yep not to derail.

Detroit is really unsafe. Police even tell the resident to arm their selves as response times are horrific.

For sure find out where you will be and ask these experts. Me personally ..I won't go to detroit. I would cite specific reasons and facts. I would plainly say I fear for my safety. Which is a legitimate worry and offerto go to any other place for the train I g except places like south cali. Places like LA in areas and compton some of the valleys etc.

Southfield is fine. It's mostly office buildings around there. My employer used to have an office in Southfield off Telegraph just south of 696 before moving further west over by Farmington. My car could almost drive itself there and back.

Assuming you're flying in to Detroit Metro, you can rest assured that you'll never set foot in the city of Detroit. The airport is in Romulus which is about 15 miles west of downtown

Word of advice - if you do fly in and rent a car, be prepared to drive Nascar style if you take 275 north away from the airport. I don't know what it is about that stretch of road, but people drive pretty fast there. I've gone by cops when doing 80 keeping up with traffic and they don't blink an eye.

Oh...trust me...I always drive nascar style! My Husband is always yelling at me when I drive, his favorite line is "slow down Nascar!"

I guess I have the need for speed :)
