Going to Detroit, what to do? Pray my friend. Pray.

Yes, I've been there before and understand it has gotten much worse. I have no desire to be within 100 miles of that place.

Great...I am getting more and more nervous by the minute. I may need a new job because I am about to tell my boss I am not going!

Where in Detroit? Detroit proper, or one of the burbs?
Or, turn around and go home.
I lived in the Detroit area most of my life and have no desire to go back unless I really need to.
I spent almost 2 years in a high school that should have had armed guards roaming the place. Probably does now.

Depends exact where in Detroit. Around the ren center isn't bad. I've done a fair amount of work in Detroit.

What city exactly are you going to? Detroit is kinda general. I consider anything east of Howell, MI and south of interstate 96 to be Detroit. :)

detroit has like 30% unemployment like 40%of the street lights dont work has more murders than anyone else percapita and something like 20% of the property has unpaid taxes and there something like 17000 vacant homes. Has a population of like half of what it did 60 years ago.

It would be below chicago on my list of places to go.

Even as a man there is no way i would go out after dark even with another and armed!!!

Flint scares me more than Detroit. Neither is very good.

Atlanta is pretty bad too. I go to marietta which is a northern burn that touches atl. There is a shooting EVERY time I am there for overnight trips. Someone literally dies every time I am there from being shot. The place is a zoo!!

Not sure exactly where, I just know that they gave me until the end of summer to go and take the class and get certified. I have been putting it off for a long time because I really don't want to go!

No need to scare the lady. .

Is the city a bad one? Maybe?

But does every city have it attributes? Yes.

So take them in stride. Look up a good restaurant and eat well on your employer, don't go out at night (No need to), and do not do anything you feel is uncomfortable.

Detroit isn't terrible. I spent a week in east LA/Compton back in 2003. That was a bit rough but I stayed out of the areas I figured I shouldn't be in. I lived. :)

I'm going to take a guess that you'll be in one of the southern or northwest suburbs of Detroit. The only spots I don't care for are the bombed out areas right outside downtown. Doubtful you'd be anywhere in that area. If you're in Southfield, Troy, Warren or any of those towns you'll be OK.

Turn the wrong way when leaving Motor City Casino (was there for work) and you'll know what I mean.

Seriously though Ward, use common sense and you'll do fine. Detroit has a bad rap, but so does every big city. If you're not smack downtown you'll be in a suburb. Most of the Detroit suburbs are perfectly fine.

One guy says the burbs are fine and you want to stay in them another says stay out of residential area?? Maybe he means residential/bombed out areas.

Seriously I have seen the stories on tv about the "bombed out areas" and seen the video.

Here are the stats for you.

Earlier today Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, the largest municipal bankruptcy in history.
Municipal bond experts Peter Hayes and James Schwartz of Blackrock published a brief analytical note earlier this month titled "Distress In Detroit." In it they offered some stats that would make anyone cringe.
    Here are eleven of them:
    Detroit's population has plunged 63% since 1950.
    ...and it's down 26% since 2000.
The unemployment rate hit a high of 27.8% in July 2009.
As of April 2013, the unemployment rate was at 16%.
Even though the population fell 63% since 1950, the municipal workforce fell by just 40%, adding to the strain on public finances.
Detroit has the highest violent crime rate of any large U.S. city
...it's five times higher than the national average.
40% of the city's street lights don't work.
78,000 structures and 66,000 lots are abandoned.
Arson accounts for 1,000 of 12,0000 fires per year.
...60% of those arson fires are in dilapidated or empty buildings.

My daughter works for an airline and flies all over the country By herself Sometimes staying for a week, Getting training and teaching others.
Some areas around these airports can be bad, She just uses common sense when and where to go out and about, And she keeps in contact with us back home here
