Rescues around here do not necessarily operate the same way as Humane Societies.
    • Some rescues are very stringent with home visits and all kinds of other requirements - and I have no idea how they adopt any animal out,
    • Some require that you foster first before adopting (the animal is still legally theirs until adoption),
    • Some just call your vet,
    • and some are more relaxed.
With some rescues, it depends on the animal itself as to how they adopt - especially with existing medical conditions, abuse victims, or behavioral issues. Also, as a condition of adoption, most rescues require that if things don't work out, that you have to bring the animal back to them. They do not want to see them back (they have failed the animal and put them under more stress, so they work hard to find the right fits. I can see where sometimes that gets in their way and they miss some great opportunities.

Oh yeah, in this part of the Northeast a lot of places bring the animals from down south or out west - selecting from kill shelters and disaster areas. We do not have the huge amount of unwanted puppies/kittens, dogs/cats etc. that some states experience so they can be more stringent in the adoption rules.

I moved Blackie up to his prescribed 300mg pills. I can't stand to see him flinching, which I know is pain. So far it looks like he became used to the 150 for several months now, and 200 recently, he's not knocked out and sleeping from his pain pills yet. ( Yet ) I don't want him to feel pain but I don't want to see him sleeping 24/7 either, that's not life, kwim? I'll update tomorrow or Monday...

He's been refusing his prescription dog food, tried many things, latest trick working is to crush up "dental" treats and mix into his canned food. Whatever works, right?

    Feel bad for Blackie

We had to have Linux on pain meds due to her spinal calcification. Had to quickly reduce the dosage so that she wasn't in pain, but not nearly comatose.

Keep Blackie as comfortable as possible. Tough when they can't tell you what or how they are feeling. Good luck WW and Blackie.

One time I asked WWW to crush some ice cubes for me to fit through the narrow opening in my disposable water bottle. He looked at me, grabbed the water bottle and ice cubes and a glass from the cupboard ....... :picard:.....

So tonight after he did not want to eat his canned food with pain pill powder, chicken broth and dental treats this morning.... Well, after not trying for several months I tried pills in peanut butter again, both the pain pills and his "private parts" pill and he took it :dex: This should last for awhile, yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, whatever gets his medicine in his tummy :)

Anyway, I gave up on protecting his kidneys, gave him my linguini and spaghetti sauce (Hunts garlic & herb Chaz and Chazsbetterhalf ) Who cares, he can eat yummy stuff while he's still here, tired of denying him. We never fed him our food for meals but gave him treats from our plates. Done with diet restrictions, he can eat whatever he wants now. I'll boil up some rice tomorrow to mix in with our human food.

Yes, he spoons with me every night since I picked him up after he was dumped in 2006, I'm prepared for dog farts tonight

He passed out on a full tummy and pain pills under my desk stool, I'll carry him to bed with me <3

At this point, whatever it takes for him to take his meds and eat. Specialty diets don't work if he won't take it in.

Shadow is wearing the cone of shame right now as she has licked her back paw raw between the pads. I have looked and can't see a sliver or anything else embedded in her paw. Keeping a sock on it is going to be quite a struggle even with the cone. I think the cone needs to be about 2 inches longer but at least she can't lick it if the sock gets pulled off.

Could be something as insignificant as a mosquito bite that is irritating poor Shadow. Hope she gets over the shame of the cone :)

I think she may have gotten a cut and then licked it so hard, it is now raw.

Oliver suffers from skin lesions/hot spots, I can usually keep them under control if I see them early enough with gentamicin spray, if they get away from me sometimes he has to go on an oral antibiotic and or prednisone

    Thought I would update,

Blackie is hanging in there :) on the full Rx of pain meds, have to wonder if he's gained tolerance to them since he's not passed out on orig dose now, but he's more comfortable on the full mg's. I bought him adhesive grip sticky grip pads for his paws so he could get around better on our laminate floors, he took them off by himself the first night  :picard:. I also ordered another kind of paw pad grip, it's more like a stamp pad (for those of us that remember rubber stamps). Hope to get that applied tomorrow.

On a good note, he's finally asking an allowing me to get him on to and off of the bed instead of insisting he can do it himself and crashing and burning sometimes. That scared me he would break something and I'm so relieved he lets me help him now :)

Very possible that Blackie became tolerant to the meds, sounds like bringing him back up to full dosage was a good move. Glad he is letting you help.

I had a dog I carried up and down the stairs for a year - took him a while to accept that but I guess he got tired of sliding down the stairs when his legs gave out. He was okay walking/standing, just could no longer do the stairs.

Shadow's paw is healing. She is learning to cope with the cone of shame. I may keep it on for one more day. She can reach the paw but she is not able to really get at it. They are staying home today so I think we will leave it on her.
