    Bizzaro world here, talking about our aging dogs and adding a new member to our pack and a few hours later the first ever "bite" from 12 + ? y/o Blackie. Sweet deaf old dog sleeping on couch. Darling Kiddo jazzed up to a song in Lego movie dancing away something between figure skating jumps and bouncing off the edge of the couch cushions meets Old Navy Clothes dancing commercials. I did not see it but heard him yelp. In a split second he's down and kiddo had red marks on her arm and is tears. No, did not break her skin nor bruise her and the red scratch marks are gone. But he's never ever ever bit, nipped, or even mouthed in anyway.

    Going with an unfortunate combination of circumstances (hearing loss, sleeping deep, and kiddo startling him out of sleep, and likely bonked him somewhere with her elbow on his bony body or head). Two strikes your out is now in effect. New rule is if she wants to bounce or dance etc. anywhere and he is sleeping near by he goes into the bedroom FIRST, then the dancing etc. I'm really on the fence about this as I have a zero tolerance with biting dogs, but trying to weigh 12 years of faithful affectionate protective family dog. Ugggg, now both doggies are wait and see. (BTW, Blondie is hanging in there on her medications, but if they stop working or she gets worse that's it)

    Also I wanted to mention Blondie's chronic lifelong ear infections are under control now for the first time ever. Common factor in this timing? I think it's her new meds for her malfunctioning small intestine and the prednisone. (bocefus78 if you see this).

    We had that happen here with our granddaughter. She bounced off the couch and landed on the sleeping dog. Dog about 11. Dog bite on child's face. Still has a scar. Like a chicken pox pit scar. Dog lived to be 17. No other biting. On the other hand, our granddaughter got bit again twice from strange dogs while visiting in other homes. She'll graduate from college next year and will be an RN

    Thank you Larry, going to do our (my) best to prevent this from happening again. Totally out of character for him and I need to consider he's never been deaf before or slept so deep until recently. The red marks are gone and there is no bruising as of tonight. I'll find a way for him and kiddo.

    I'm sure it was the unfortunate set of circumstances. Poor guy had no idea and suddenly got "attacked" (in his sleep fogged mind). Poor kiddo who must have been very shocked that her bud would do something like that. Hope you can find a way to keep them both safe!

    So Blondie is doing well? Last I had heard they had no idea and you were about at wit's end. Glad things are working out for her. Hmm, sounds like she had a low grade allergy that became worse - but not knowing all her meds, that is a very presumptuous assumption on my part.

    I think the dog was just surprised/startled and defended herself...fight or flight instinct is still strong in most dogs. I think more importantly is, what was the dogs disposition immediately after the bite? If she was immediately submissive/subdued then you have no problem with the dog, if she was agitated/aggressive/defensive even after she realized who she bit then that's a much bigger problem.

    :rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol:

    I should have updated you on Blondie, sorry. Yes, I was at my wits end, it was too hard on all us (especially her) to keep up with it . Do you recall the vet lost a test? After like 3 weeks of calling and they wanted to wait for the nonexistent results to come in (that period was our wits end) asked the vet if she would treat Blondie as if the lost test had been positive. Her diarrhea and vomiting is now mostly controlled, it was so grotesque, actually more rancid than not making it really hard to clean up (ya, lets not forget I worked at a vet and the kennels at a humane society, I have more experience than most with pooper scooping, this was atrocious), and the gas she had 24/7 for those same weeks was just as bad. Unknown diagnosis but vet hovers around intestinal bacterial overgrowth and her small intestines are leaking protein. She seems happy. Her abdomen is extremely distended. She's on Metronidazole, B12, prednisone , probiotics, a strict diet and Cerenia as needed (antinausea). She'll be on these meds for life or until they stop working. It was like stomach flu/norovirus for over 3 weeks straight:confused:.

    Yes, Blackie was absolutely was submissive :yes: and seemed shocked like "what just happened?"

    Hazelnut was adopted yesterday. Hope she got a great home :)

    wildwest , 20 years ago, my 18 month old Rottweiler was sleeping, 18 month old nephew jumped off the chair and landed on the dog. The dog didn't as much bite him as bumped his head with an open mouth. Never happen again in 15 years. Same nephew once pulled a hot dog out of dog's mouth. Slapped her on the nose and told her no we need to share.:eek:

    Dutch went deaf, last year of her life. And she became more aggressive when somebody came to the door and she didn't know they were there, felt like she wasn't doing her job!

    Thank you friend, I've been over in my mind what happened a hundred times now. I woke up this morning thinking it's VERY possible her elbow and his mouth open while yelping both accidentally met at the wrong moment and there was no bite or nip involved at all. He's an extremely vocal dog. (read 12 years of shrieking ((Giz Stinny :rofl: :lol: ))/yipping barking when he's happy, or excited, or the UPS guy is here, or rough housing with Blondie, or joining in with us humans dancing), or, anything you can mention.

    Interestingly he is more relaxed without hearing (more then 50%), only catches a glimpse of UPS once in a while, and does not go into "protect" sounding off mode for odd noises like he used to. He's still afraid of thunder and snow sliding off the metal roof, but he's been taking really long deep naps in the second bathroom the last several months during those times (relief for all of us). I really appreciate all your input and everyone else's input. Feel better about the whole situation since last night.

    Loon , So very sorry to hear Emma has that prognosis. I know that you and Mrs. Loon will do right by her. I still feel pain with what my Max went through in July. So many "what if's" No good answers. I gave CBD to Max to help with his comfort. It seemed to help during a time we felt so helpless.

    I see no problem with the dog at all. If you wake me up like that I have a tendency to take a swing. It's also common for males (PEOPLE)in their 20-30s to swing comming out of anetheisa(deep sleep) so why hold an aging dog to higher standards.
    The lack of blood also to me shows the poochies true nature.

    Well it's been a long recovery from knee surgery back in Feb, a second surgery for a torn meniscus and a nasty antibiotic resistant infection, but I think Jackson is back to full hound dog activities:)
