Patience! It is all outcome based. If the surgery will not make him any better than the passive treatment, well. that is up to you and the vet. Just know that the recovery period may well be the same if not longer with surgery. You'll need to be just as aggressive keeping him from running or even climbing stairs. Been there and done that. No fun.

Dave, try to let it heal by itself. We have had bad luck with those surgeries. They rarely heal well and are often not done properly. If you chose surgery make sure you go to a vet who routinely does this sort of thing. We had one done at a University clinic where they specialize in orthopedic surgeries. We did 2 hip replacements over the years and they went well but both knee surgeries were botched. One that was done for a friend of ours on a pup just over a year old went fairly well but had extensive after care with swimming pool exercise etc. the kind of thing that is beyond most of us. But even there the dog is now about 8 and limping.
    Hope Jackson heals well.

Lucy is finally getting a little better. After months of cooking and balancing her diet, we now added psyllium fiber to her diet. It has mad all the difference. Her bowels are now formed. Her absorption should get a little better with time and the inflammation should decrease. She gets one capsule into breakfast and one into her supper. That's less than a gram of fiber per day. If you want more info on how psyllium works go to www.Examine.com it has very good in depth information. For anybody who is feeding other than regular dog food, please make sure to include extra calcium into their diet or your dog will end up seriously ill.

This is our pup, Jade. She is so jealous of the cat
when my wife takes him down stairs.....she has to follow
the action as long as she can.

I cried bitterly. Lost too many loving souls over the years.
