Lucy, I shared this article with my dear friend that owns Basenji's and lost two over the years, as well as my father & wife that have also lost 2 to autoimmune diseases and brought one back from from death and have a signed cert from the vet that this one is ok and will no longer receive vacc's. I also doubled back to Cocoa's breeders website and found and article there too from animalhealthmagazine. Thank You Lucy.

I'd be willing to bet that if he hears a gun action (such as a pump shotgun, lever action, revolver being cocked. slide action on a semi.....etc) that he'd go bananas. Maybe some link there to trauma/bad memories?

I have no doubt Dear Lilly had a hand in this, she told Earl "you and val will have you at ""hello"" ."

I agree completely. He does not react well to gunshots, neighbors have a range and that fact was immediately evident.
If I ever found out some jackazz was dry firing at him, I'd be up on charges.

Bk, start feeding him from a metal bowl dumping food in making noise on purpose. Treats from metal tongs deliberately clanking them etc. He needs to hear these noises and associate them to something he likes rather than fear them. It's gonna take time.

I like the metal tong idea, that may help quite a bit. I'll give it a try for a while, see what happens. Good idea.

It is so good reading your posts. Earl is a lucky dog to have found you three. Going to the shelter can be very traumatic even for hours. The whole process is horrible and they don't understand any of it. Like small children they think they did something wrong to deserve that. Shelters are very noisy places. Doors and gates banging that forever shut you away from those that you thought loved you. Think of it as a prison ward with all the metal banging. Plus endless other animals in fear and some in pain.
With Doug helping, he'll come around but it will take time. Those are very deep seated fears.
I've got Pippa here who came last Christmas during a bad cold spell. Max (my big "patrol dog") brought her home with him. She still jumps if i move too fast or pick up a broom or hammer. She is the little one in front of Lucy. Those two adore each other.

Do you have any prednisone or prednisolone? If so give him 5 mg but be careful that he doesn't choke, he has to be awake enough.

wildwest, I hope its a different vet WWW is taking him. Pred has pulled many kittens and cats thru for me over the years. It's great for kittens with really high fever. They can survive while otherwise their little brain would fry. Let us know, i hope he'll be alright.

I do, I am on it for life, and have extra for flares n tapers. I don't know what's wrong though and hesitate to to give him some incase is masks something more serious that needs treatment. They are on their way thankfully.

I have used it when i can't get to the vet have to keep them going. Pred is a lifesaver for cats in many ways, they can metabolize it better than we can. I'm never without it. I also keep it around for the dogs. We had 8 snake bites early this summer, all copperheads. Pred plus benedril works great against the swelling.

It is indeed a different Vet. This one specializes in equine, but also does small animal, reviews on the local groups here is mostly" too expensive", and the other 1/3 saying the "best care in town". I really hope it's not a big deal, but too many variables including the bad visit last friday, his reaction, and also lil one has totally bonded with him.

My husband just called and told me one of our cats is sick. I'll have to go into town tomorrow and take him to the vet. He started with goopy eyes and sniffles and then got nose bleed.
Charles put him on antibiotics but he is getting worse, doesn't eat now. Hodge is older, we had him for 13 years but he was grown when we got him so we don't know his actual age.

I'm sorry, is that the one with chalmyd/herp? Either way I hopethe vet can work some magic and he feels better soon!

Kitten is on his way home, fluids and anti-nausea, he is not critical, so wait and hope and if he does not rebound go back for more testing. Fingers crossed!

Keep a very close eye on his temperature if gets as high as 104 to 105, please give him a pred. It won't hurt him but push the temp down which will make him feel better and he may even eat for you, pred helps with that also. Kittens like babies tend to get rather hot fevers.
Hodge probably does have the herpies virus, i suspect most of them do and it gets active when something else goes wrong. What worries me is the nose bleeding not a good thing in cats. The last time we had that it ended up being cancer.
