o_O My Blackie dog has very similar coloring and I named him Rylee (Ryan and Lee combo). Poor lil dog hit the pot luck, as appears his rescuer did too. Awesome story!!

Looks like Birdie will be getting a companion cockatiel. A neighbor texted me that she was looking for a home for 3 yo Ziva. I said sure, why not. She comes with her own cage and everything so birdie won't have to share (he doesn't like sharing, doesn't like other birds - he outlived all birds I've had). Probably pick her up this weekend unless the timing doesn't work for them.

Now to figure out how to fit another cage into the living room

Well, at least I can't possibly put off that project (creating a spot) for months or years :emb:

All of my pets are either cast-off's or rescues. Birdie himself was 10 years old when I took him in for a friend who moved to AZ in 2003. Fuzzy was feral for at least 5 years before consenting to be touched, much less come into the house. And Rita was from 4-7 y/o when I got her from the Rescue League.

Just another piece to fit into the puzzle of our lives :)

Just look at your new little companion and see it as a load of unexpected firewood. There is always room:stacke::stacke::banana:

I had Oliver's DNA test done. His father is Walker Hound and mother was a Heinz57. The panel of "known" breeds that his DNA was compared to did not contain Walker Hound, so it is not surprising that most of Oliver's genome came back as "undefined" indicated by all of the white regions on his Karyogram. Fox Hounds are very closely related to Walker Hounds, so that is the reason why that breed came up. Also his mother being a mixed breed contributed to a good portion of his genome coming back as "undefined", but she was apparently mostly Lab with some Rottweiler, Pit Bull (staffordshire terrier) and maybe some Shepherd and Collie.

My family is getting a kick out of him being "undefined":)

    His father and mother.

Welcome to your new home Ziva. Her owner dropped her off just after 10 this morning.

She came with her original, small cage (what she is in now), and a huge behemoth of a cage (below - in front of a 36" w door)). The huge one is on CL now and I have ordered her a cage that is the same size as Birdies - spacious for a single cockatiel, but small enough for the room I have.

Birdie doesn't seem to mind as long as he isn't expected to share cage space and she stays "over there". Ziva, although a bit noisy at first, seems to have settled down. I don't think Fuzzy even noticed the short time he came in. Rita hasn't come in yet. I may have to move Ziva to a higher table until her new cage comes in (Rita has a problem leaping), but Rita may ignore her just as she ignores Birdie - I'll just have to keep an eye out.

Birdie does not like being out of his cage at all (I got him at 10 y/o in 2003 and he's always been that way). I haven't tried with Ziva yet. I figure to let her settle into her new surroundings before adding the stress of being handled by a, to her, stranger.

Signed papers on the Dawg today. Now I have a question-
He was a part of a family as a pup, then he was given up. At some point he was struck by a car and on his own long enough for his right femur to heal on its own. We have contact info from a couple in Houston who were a foster family for him for a while. They expressed all the traits he's showing here, and basically he's a good dog. But, while they had him, they called him "Scout". I prefer Scout to King for some reason.
So, should we reinforce that name? Is it too late for him to identify as Scout? He actually ignores both names if there's a cat in site, but once you break his concentration seems to recognize both names.
    What'choo think? He's only a year old.

He will learn his new (old) name quickly enough if you don't confuse him by calling him King. Actually, my dogs usually had two names; Bogie was also "guy" - as in "Hi Guy", Niki was also "girl", Samson was also "son or even "kiddo" - heck one of our friends decided he looked like a Rufus and called him that, so really, they learn nicknames too.
