Right now we have most areas fenced with permanent 2" x 4" x 48" woven wire field fence and some additional areas with 48" high "semi permanent" electronetting which has 10 horizontal electrified wires (8000 volts) and non-electrified verticals ( ElectroFence® & ElectroFence® Plus 11/48/12 Electric Netting for Sheep - Premier1Supplies ). Lots of sheperds use this stuff, especially for rotational grazing. We plan to eventually use it for rotational grazing (during the day only), and put up permanent wire field fencing on our permanent paddock areas.

I hope that does it. I think the only real thing you can count on is the experiences of those in the surrounding area. I know that here, the coyotes are real nuisance. I don't have experience with raising sheep but I do read the paper and have seen reports of coyotes raiding farms. There is a FB page dedicated to coexisting with coyotes. "Farming with Coyotes in Maine" Farming with Coyotes in Maine | Facebook.. I am not sure how sympathetic most people are.

Yes they are and #11 on the smarts list! Very trainable and very eager to please. And "LOVES TENNIS BALLS" They will go crazy over tennis balls o_O. They are a 150lb dog in a 30lb body and will not back down from anything. Bred for herding cattle! :eek:o_O and can do it quite well, you wouldn't believe it but man are they good! I had big dogs most of my life till my wife and I got a Corgi 25 years ago and had them ever since with the exception of our beloved Lab we lost this past spring. :(

Yep. Apparently lamas and alpacas are excellent guard animals too.

You have to protect your property or it will taken away one nibble at a time. I once had coon wipe out my chickens by reaching into the wire. The chicken would explore what was going on and loose its head in the process.

Used to have a husky mix. He and his brother (who lived elsewhere) both learned that if they wiggled their toes chickens would come to check it out. My husky was on a cable and would do that to pull the free-roaming chickens in, then kill them (living as BIL's house at the time - BIL was NOT impressed ).

My dog's brother lived on a farm and the chickens were in a coop. He would wiggle his toes outside the wire, the chickens would stick their heads out and Off With Their Heads :jaw:. Took his owner quite some time to figure out how the chickens were being killed since apparently they would live long enough to pull back into the pen. The owner just saw dead birds inside the pen and couldn't figure out what was getting in there and decimating his flock. Finally caught his pup doing the deed and I believe he put up a second fence around the first pen so that couldn't happen any more.
