I saw a Bald Eagle the other day. I have seen them twice before in Colorado, this is the first time in Wyoming. Its a 55mph highway so naturally when I slowed down from doing 60mph I was already past.... Bad pic but I can almost still make it out. THEN, he took flight. :jaw: I swear his wingspan looked wider than I am tall!

Glad you got to see one of those. Yes, they are large. There are many of them here. They fly along the river and catch fish, many of them are seen at our local landfill, not a pretty place to see this majestic bird. They are very common, but still protected. I found a dead one at the base of a telephone pole out front of our place. He had been electrocuted by the transformer wires. We had to call the game warden to come collect the bird. All the feathers, by law, go to the native Americans so they can be used in their rituals.

Yes they do. We were at the zoo this summer and we learned that they are required to pick up any/all feathers that the Eagles lose on a given day to then be mailed off to Washington...then they distribute them to American Indians as you said. It made me chuckle to think of a closet somewhere in the White House stuffed full of feathers

Not improbable - an adult's wingspan is nearly 6 feet (males) to nearly 8 feet long (females). And, an interesting tidbit; the northern Bald Eagles are larger than their southern breathren.

also, they travel as much as a thousand miles away from their hatch nest when they fledge, and seek out there own territory. Sub adults do not get their distinctive white head and tail feathers until about 4 years of age, when they become sexually mature. Their primary source of feed is fishing, which takes them about a year to prefect. They also scavenge and are carrion feeders as well. They generally mate for life and can live up to 25 years in the wild. Fascinating to watch the live cam nests each year as they cycle thru each years production.

We live in the land of the bald eagle. campinspecter had to set up a spider web of fish line over our yard so the eagles wouldn't think about three little dogs for lunch. there are several places along rivers and creeks where the trees are full of eagles in the late summer and early fall. they are waiting for the fish to go up the rivers.
