So sorry to hear of your friend passing. It is always so difficult to have a loss of a family pet.

Check this product out, for all you off-leash dog people! A collar with an integrated retractable leash. No more carrying leashes with you all the time. No more fumbling for collars/D rings/clips trying to get the dog leashed up. No more tangling of slack leash lines.

Release N Run Leash | Rad Dog

Check out the star of the promotional video!

Any thing available about the chance of the dog getting caught up by the leash getting catching on something while off and running in the brush or woods?

That is a concern. The hand loop is about 75% concealed in a pouch attached to the collar, and when fitted to the dog correctly the hand loop is directly behind the top of the dogs head. I think that minimizes the concern as much as you can. I woul not allow the dogs out unsupervised, so if they did get caught up you could rescue them.

I think it might work better as a harness, that way the hand loop could be in line with the dogs body and make it even less likely to catch on something. I have had one of the dogs get caught up in the brush wearing a harness so there is that concern too.

We had a harness for our German shepherd to carry her own crunchies in a backpack when we hiked out camping. She managed to get hung up and shed the harness and backpack. It was a little scary thinking she could have been somewhere where we couldn't see her.

This is Essie, the newest member of our tribe. She about 8#. She needed a spay and to have some mammary tumors removed when we got her, but she had a benign lump in her throat that caused the original Vet at the rescue to abort the intubation for her operations. Our vet was able to do the spay and and biopsy first and then followed that up with the mastectomy a few weeks later. Meanwhile, a little prednisone took care of the the throat lump. She's done great through of this and is settling in with all the other dogs. Still circumspect about the cat.

Cute little girl. Good luck with her. Those little ones live a long life when well protected.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. This is the most at peace I have been with losing a friend and I have gone thru this about 20 times.

Tory had a hard growth around his windpipe that was acting like a vice and constructing his breathing. Only indications that something was wrong was a couple of weeks ago his purring and snoring changed in frequency and timber. Then he quit eating at the beginning of the week, but was still in good spirits and his usual loving self. The vet said that as hard and large as the growth was (lengthwise - didn't stick out), that there was no way they could remove it. I was able to let him go out before he had really started suffering and thinking he was still toward the top of his game. I could have taken him home and watched him go downhill for another couple of weeks, but elected to not watch that, nor let him feel the effects.

I was pretty sure that it wasn't good when I took him in and had prepared myself for a couple of days. This picture is from the evening before - he looks extremely good for a cat that at best had 2 weeks left and I'm glad I can remember him that way.

Did a little looking around. This is an important issue to me because I have 6 Himalayan cats. A couple common things came up. One biggie: encourage fluid intake, others: feed wet food, not fish. Lower the ph. I googled the subject. Many articles that have common themes. Good fluid intake and lower the PH. Personally, I am all into a grain free diet. My cats never eat people food of any kind. Mostly because they stick their nose up at it. I feed both wet and dry food. alway have fresh water near them.
Here is one product. There are several others on Amazon.

I switched out the cats water bowl with one of the "fountain" types and have noticed a big difference in the litter box.

It takes a GOOD owner to love and care for a beloved pet. It takes a GREAT owner to do the right thing when the time comes.

She is an excellent addition to the family. I wish she would gain weight faster, but she acts happy and healthy. HA!! I caught this pic while she was licking her chops :) Interesting thing here, lil one was splashing away in the tub a few feet away when I took the pic and she was not alarmed by the water. Very Cool.

You got me thinking I had better get my butt going on "Prevention" so I ordered the fountain from Amazon. It is the basic pet safe model. Just sat it up, still waiting for the cats to discover it. I have it up where the dogs can't get to it. I'll let you know how the cats adjust to it. I no sooner sat it up when I got to thinking I would have been better served had I bought one with the reserve tank.
