Hard to like this post as well. We all have gone through this and it doesn't get any easier.

Rottiman, I have had Dogs since I was born, now at 54 I couldn't imagine not having a "FRIEND"! They are always there for you no matter how you feel! I know when I've had some of my absolute worst days, there is always a wagging tail and a friendly greeting when I come through the door! So I don't know how anyone could possibly say, "it's just an animal or just a dog"! :headbang::picard: I have lost many dogs/friends and it still "NEVER" get's any easier, and everyone of them has a special place in my heart! I know, "my belief" that they will be there waiting for us when God calls us all, My heart tells me I will see them again! I read once something
that made such sense and it went something like this…. Man has his pleasures in life, TV, food, wine, drink, toys, radio, bars, social items, material things etc… But all your Dog has is "YOU"! Thats why when you come through the door, they are so happy to see you because "YOU" are their joy! Take the time to go play with them, throw the ball, pet them, and enjoy each other! Don't forget, they live to see you and love you unconditionally. Give them the love in return, their not asking for much!:) I live every day remembering that! :tears:

Bear may surprise you. Our Farley ( yellow English Lab) made it to 16 years 7 months. He had a couple of lumps, but one malignant lump ended up taking a toe on his back foot. We caught that early enough, so it never spread past that joint. That never slowed him down.

IMHO, it's time to add another pup. There's a good chance that it will reinvigorate Bear. Also, little one can imprint from Bear.

Your FHC dog peeps understand Rotti.

That is sad to hear Rotti. I've watched this pet thread from afar and read most pages of what everyone has gone through good and bad.

We lost our family dog when I was a young kid and held her during her last breaths. From that moment on, I decided no dogs in my life. My kids want one, and I come up with every excuse under the sun not to have one. We have friends and neighbors with dogs, so I do get some dog time in.

I'm really impressed with how much care you all give your pets and the pictures really show it. Cats and a goldfish just aren't the same.

Jon, I respect and understand what you did and went through. Yes, it's painful but there is also great joy in knowing you gave a dog a good life and gave it love! Some dogs and animals don't get that chance so what ever you do for an animal is most likely better that what it had! You can make a difference in the quality of life for some wonderful dog who will love you again in return!:)

I appreciate the words, Dave. My wife gets the dog rescue organization feeds on FB. Believe me, I get that feeling I want one, but no, it's not for me again.

Our latest cat was a rescued feral. She is a great little cat. We were happy to get her and we think how she could have be outside on bitter cold nights.

Horkn, I hear what your saying. I have had dogs virtually all of my life. Spent 6 years as a LEO Canine Handler. I have had many different breeds and many different personalities. The wife and I have decided that when we lose Bear, he will be our last one. At our ages, another dog may very well outlast us. As we both are now retired, we may want to do some traveling also. I have always been a big dog person and not as much of a ankle- mauler fan. I find it virtually impossible to travel with a big dog, i.e. trying to get motel rooms, sight-seeing, etc. and I absolutely refuse to put my dog in a kennel. So, he will be the end of the line, although fostering may fall into place as a alternative to canine companionship. Time will tell.............................

Rotti, I here ya about a big Dog! I was the same until I met a Corgi. They are a "BIG" dog in a smaller frame! They have such a personality is unbelievable and they think they are 150lbs!;) Our older guy weighs in at 33lbs and it's a good traveling dog. They are content pretty much any where they are. Believe it or not, they were raised for cattle herding and boy can they ever!!!

rottiman So sorry to hear the prognosis on your pal. So very painful to watch their decline. You have the right approch. Comfort first. Don't allow them to have prolonged suffering. An acquaintance lost his rotti a couple years back. He now has another who has also assumed being his best friend. They are so good for each other.

This is a 4.5 month old guide dog puppy that we are watching for a few days. Its a bit different than having a pet being that it is someone else's dog but it's a lot of fun.

He seems like he will be a great guide dog. Perfect demeanor and smart.
