Well, below is our hiking thread, but what I'll add here is better explained in our pet thread.

Maple was dumbazz twice. First, the ride up. My pack and Matts were kept in the bed box of the pickup, and Dawn's I put in the back seat on the floor. When we got to the trail head, Dawn's bite valve was missing off of her camelbak and we couldn't find it anywhere. Luckily, it's the smaller version from years ago and if Maple ate it, it should pass, but we're pizzed none the less.

Second, when she sees standing water,she must go to it (unless I dont allow it, she stays put) well, I had no problem since we were hiking, but I expected her usual go in a couple inches deep. Nope, her dumbazz thought it would be an excellent idea to launch over the open water onto ice, that was only a half inch think, completely sinking. She didn't expect this, and swam out, shook off. Even though it was freezing cold out,it didn't phase her. This will be something I watch out for in the future. I must check the thickness of the ice during questionable times so she don't drown herself. Ohhhh!

WoW DaveGunter- how i missed this post a year+ ago I dont know, but it certainly gave me goosebumps and i think my heart stopped while reading it! Knowing Oliver is ok, kept me composed. Damm! After Maple decided to jump the open water to the thin ice, after she swam out I knew right away, this is something ill have to watch very closely with her. She loves water, even cold........ her ancestors were bred specifically to retrieve birds from the chesapeake bay and break ice with their broadened chests! Ummm, no! We wont be doing any of that!
