Bentleys pooped. He went on his first deer recovery today. Had good blood at times and none at times. He followed it on the money but no permission to continue after 300yds. Good thing there was a deer stashed in the bushes for him to "find". He also found a winter kill rack while on the blood.

This was a neighbor shooting, not me. I had no action today :(

Nice looking dog. Does he wear an orange vest when in the woods? Maine doesn't allow dogs to participate in any part of deer hunting. I've been in groups and did hear hunters say they shoot any dog they see in the woods during hunting season. And that did happen to an acquaintance of mine. worse yet, it happened on his own land. A young chocolate lab. Less and less land is left unrestricted because of these COMMON indiscretions. It really is a shame to see either of these things happen.

That is similar to here in Pa. The hunting book is vague, leaving a "grey" area when it comes to dogs and deer. They word it in a way that sounds like if dogs are pushing deer, it is legal to shoot the dog. I know many hunters that use dogs to help track the shot deer, and this is legal. So how on earth can someone decifer the difference? No dog should be allowed to get shot, PERIOD!

Will do, along with a hefty shopping list that we'll need to get. Special intestinal track food, rice, chicken, ointments, prescriptions, etc.

We just finished our night visit with Maple. She was clearly medicated with whatever they gave her to quiet her down. She kept walking throughout the room licking the floor, had an accident, getting up on the chair, back on down. You'd think they would inspect the visiting room prior to having anyone in there. She picked up a cotton ball, and we had to pull it out of her mouth!:headbang:
This certainly ticked us off! But on a happier note, after about on hour, she finally laid down and fell asleep, shown below. Keeping our fingers crossed for a discharge sometime tomorrow!

What a sleepy Angel, huh?

While I don't hunt, I have a great respect for hunters and their right to hunt. I also love my dogs and have a respect for all other dogs. When dogs are hunting and should not be, it isn't their bad behavior, it is instinctual and up to the dog owner to control this. I've gotten into many heated discussions with hunters over this. My position is to report the dog incident, but just very wrong to shoot it.

I've been watching for your update. Glad she is doing better. You will have her home tomorrow and then have control over the environment. Maple will sleep better where she is secure, and so will you!

Vaseline, $1, or neosporine, not too much money :) Also surprised they allowed her to jump on and off the chairs? I was taught to limit any jumping?

ETA, salve for razor burn, NOT incision.

Same here in Wisconsin. No dogs used for anything deer related, except shed hunting. Keep your dogs c!ose by during gun deer season. Now here though, dogs are private property, so even if your dog is on someone else's land, you can't shoot them. Not without huge legal consequences.

So who the hell would shoot a dog though? Obviously if its attacking / rabid that's a whole other story.

Some one who thinks they didn't get a deer because the dogs chase them off. Wardens will tell stories of little house dogs wearing out a deer. Dear hunting is a big $$$$ business here.

Absolutely! I know her barking can be a nuissance, but I just dont trust people anymore with the thought of abuse. The tech was very nice. She said when Maple would get upset, all ya had to do is sit down with her and talk and pet her. We are very happy she'll be home soon and do exactly that- make her comfortable and control the environment.

Thanks for you expertise! I will pick everything up tomorrow. I should note, Maple wasn't jumping, but more like slowly with the front feet followed by her rear feet. I was there like a father watching over a toddler just learning to walk.

Dear Husband used to bring our fawn colored shepard with him while scouting, we zipped one of his old blaze orange hunting vests on her.
