Here's a couple more of my Gus out in the woods. The first one we were out looking for sheds, none that day but he found a big leg bone so he was pretty pumped. Look at those giant oaks that are down! County land however, no cutting allowed. Second one he had some baby coons up the tree. He's half blue tick, half border collie. He knows how to tree, never been trained. He's a maniac. Runs around the woods hearding animals like a collie and then when they go up a tree he switches to coonhound mode, funny to watch.

Wouldn't have it any other way. I don't hunt with him so I don't need a purebred, although I'm sure with some training he would hunt just fine. Best of both worlds, free spirit and independence of a hound without the stubbornness. Very smart, and wants to be close to me and have a job to do like a border collie. When off leash in the woods he never wanders too far. This one though is a different story: image.jpg
Another crazy mixed up hound! Beagle and bulldog. She got the stubbornness of both breeds and the nose of the beagle. She's allowed off leash when we're way out in the woods but she sure lets her nose dictate where she goes. She's on GPS whenever off leash. Not sure if she doesn't hear me calling or just doesn't give a chit. Usually carry a bag of cut up hotdogs with me, she seems to stay closer that way.
And this is how she usually hangs out on the couch, sitting like a human and watching animal planet.

Dave, what gps system are you using? I have the astro for her and it's awesome. Do you have the Topo maps loaded?

I don't hunt either. Both nice looking hounds. A little hybrid vigor is a good thing. Sounds like you've got the space to let them run and the patience to deal with the houndiness :).

I used the astro for a couple years, but upgraded to the alpha when my astro handheld broke. I needed the ecollar features to deal with the stubbornness of the breeds. The tracking instinct is very strong, sometimes I need the stimulation of the ecollar to "snap em out of it" and get at least part of their attention back on me.

Had another unfortunate incident with the hounds today, kinda reluctant to post about it.

Someone pepper sprayed Oakley today, I really don't understand people.

I saw the whole incident and will relate it as I saw it.

We were on private land that is open to the public. The property is several thousand acres with many miles of trails and carriage roads and a small lake. The owners specifically allow dogs off leash and many local dog owners frequent the area daily throughout the year. They provide waste bags at the entrances. Some of the local dog owners gather there occasionally to help keep the more common areas clean of waste either missed or left by inconsiderate owners. My dogs were all off leash in a very remote section. I could see a person in the distance with a small dog. My dogs didn't overreact so I just let them go...no commands...no recall...common practice the place is like a giant dog park. I got to within 50 yards of the person. Oakley approached the person, not aggressively, got within 10 yards, he is not an aggressive dog but he can react defensively on occasion if he gets spooked. My other dogs were close by. The person reacted to him approaching, pointed, said something and picked up their dog, he got spooked and reacted defensively, his bark is rather loud and overwhelming. The person reacted again..screamed something, my other dogs reacted too, started to approach the person also, I called for all the dogs with a loud whistle, Oakley still barking, defensively, not approaching the person but not backing off, they sprayed him. Chaos erupted. The person ran by me, I heard them say something like "control your dogs", at this point I was focused on Oakley, I had no interaction with the person. By the time I got things under control the person was long gone. I could tell that all of the dogs and myself could feel the effects of the spray, but Oakley got it directly in the face. From the persons first reaction to Oakley to when they sprayed him was maybe 10-15 seconds. I am a peaceful non-violent person, but I am not sure what would have happened if they stuck around.

Sounds like the person totally overreacted and what they did was totally uncalled for.
I would be really angry about that.
How is Oakley doing now okay? I would imagine though that there would be some lingering discomfort from that

I hope Oakley is back to normal. Surely it didn't feel good. In a case like that, it that were me, has I had another person to look after my pup, I would have yanked that spray from their hands and blasted them in the face. An eye for an eye.....

I really had to read this one over a couple times. I can understand the other person being alarmed, on guard etc. but your dog didn't go after her or her dog, however, she did go after your dog. That is assault and battery.
