The "leave it" command does this for me. If I see him do that, I give him the leave it followed with a come command. I will get him a drink upon coming. I pack water. No reason you shouldn't have some for yourself as well.

WWW trained field dogs to drink from water bottles. And, not alot of contaminated water either.... So if Maple is retrieving in the water, hmmmm, even my human lil one ends up taking in water during bath time. Any preventative against giardia?

I asked my vet this very question. He said I shouldn't be overly worried about it, that most dogs immune system is very capable of dealing with it, especially if they are exposed regularly and from an early age. I'm still not sure about it although I have had no issues. Keeping my hounds from not drinking in the wild is not possible. My BIL recently adopted a lab mix from one of the places that rescues dogs from southern kill shelters, she came with a giardia infection, I never asked specifics about it from him but it did not seem like a big deal.

The new pup slept all night without a wimper. I guess the kids wore her out pretty good yesterday.

My old lab would drink from whatever mud hole he could find out in the woods and never had a problem.

my Vet told me not to worry also.. we go on hikes and old labs would lay in a stream to cool off and drink from it. Swamp is brackish in dry spells could never keep dogs out of it... Goldens love to chase ducks and herons that's were they were... when got back to house they would go straight to bath tub for a bath because they knew they could not get on my bed dirty...and they had to sleep with us... they had there own beds but old bear liked to watch TV particularly big cat dairies on animal,planet...

That is kinda how I go about it too. Ive learned that bringing Maple water, she fills up, and doesnt need any out
of a dirty source. But....... I have to watch her.

Good question..... she had giardia during her young stages, which is usually passed down from the mother, but can be picked up anywhere. Most alley/farm cats, and wild animals have it, and it ends up in their scat. We medicated both dogs, and had their poo tested, but for some reason, both dogs love the fox poo in the woods. So we need to continually watch what their putting in their mouths. Sorry.....back to your question. There was, at one time a medication to prevent giardia in animals, but ended up not being too effective, so my vet stated.

Maple absolutely loves the water! She'll open the bathroom door, yes open it with her paw and jump into the shower, usually with Dawn. Not so much with me, probably because ill yell at her. Giardia is so common, that its no big deal to treat, but it is a big mess. Puppy + giardia = up many times at night. Your dogs are very well trained and are extremely smart. They can probably sniff out the most micro of organisms there are, and refuse the drink. :)

Yes she does....... both dogs a carrot daily, sometimes romaine lettuce, and celery. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are very vocal. She doesnt bark without reason, but if she smells food, she will whine to no end. There are some videos on youtube showing chessies saying I love you, etc.

    My thoughts exactly!

Speaking of which......... you ever let the dog out the back door and watch them sniff around, then finaly they squat? While handling their business, they look up at you....... and do you quick look away?

This happened earlier today. Maple is dropping a couple steamers and looks at me with an expression "ummm, do you mind.......Im trying to take a dump. A little privacy please!" :faint:
