We took Maple out for some field training. She's still young so I made quick sessions out of it. In the water she's great. I want to continue with basic commands (sit / stay on the bank, because she sees birds and wants 'em)

In the fields, we practiced simple retrieve. I would toss the dummy, Dawn would make a loud clap sound with her hands, Maple would mark the landing and retrieve. Next weekend, we will incorporate the shotgun. My son Matt will toss the dummy, Dawn will shoot opposite direction, and I will release Maple to retrieve (we'll already be 30yds away) Maybe the weekend after, we'll move closer with the gun. Below are just some field pics.....

We had a shepard (husky?) mix that lived a long time and was around for two hunters trainings. She was mostly a sight dog,.....say the command "patrol!", and she would go nuts clearing the yard and trees of any birds, fun stuff!!

Dirty, wet, and happy! A dogs life!

Hey loon how do you handle hitchhikers that embed deep in the coat? We had a little trouble today with Maples coat. We left the deep ones.

Thanks loon, we've got one similar, but the teeth aren't as close together. We'll pick one up next weekend. Her fur is similar, almost like feathers. A soft oily undercoat and a thicker overcoat to repel water. Those hickhiker buggers are deep, and we dont want to pull any fur out. Maple says thanks:yes:
