We just had some serious wildfires in my community this summer and I had to evacuate for a week. I was fortunate the fires were never closer than a mile to my property, but a lot of people in my community lost everything. One thing I didn't give much thought to before was how my firewood piles could really contribute to wildfires. The day I had to evacuate, a friend and former firefighter was at my house and the potential risk the woodpile had.... potentially, an ember could land in one of the trees, catch a branch on fire, which could fall to my woodpile, thus starting a huge fire that likely couldn't be put out even by an experienced fire crew. Or... if the ember landed on the woodpile, it would grow to a big fire and likely catch the stand of trees on fire. I then placed my sprinklers on my wood piles fore a couple hours as we packed up all our important belongings. I guess my point is, while considering how you want to build your wood shed, also consider where would be the best place to put it.
