I like a few buckets of sand for Winter as well. The sand here though is in small pockets surrounded by glacial till gravel - so I have to do a bit of sifting to get the rocks out. In most cases I like it better than salt which only works when the temps are right. The road to my house is gravel, not asphalt.

 

For the first time, this spring, I picked up rock salt well ahead if time. Its stacked in 5G buckets ready to be moved to the air-lock this winter.

Its nice to be a little ahead of the game, particularly if prices get stoopit this fall. Too many years I've been the fool buying salt just before a storm. Bought out Lowes though...no more there till winter.

Good you're getting sand in early.

 

Our town allows residents to take rock salt from the highway shed, one 5gal bucket at a time.

I can find clay also.. buildings are above swamp 150 ish feet swamp is all clay..
