Don't kid yourself. When I was logging, many moons ago, we used a dray year around. Yes, it pulls harder when the ground is not frozen but it still works. If pulling with atv I can't load it nearly as heavy unless pulling on a lot of leaves or grass and then it is not bad. Of course snow make it pull super easy. The dray I built is for the atv. If using a tractor, one needs to build it bigger and heavier. We used to take about a 10" log and pull a slab off two sides on the mill. One side was for the up and one for the down. Then just take the chain saw and cut the front of the runners at an angle. I know of one fellow who built one and angled both front and back then put chain on so he could pull it from either end as reverse does not work too well with these! That is, you usually hook a chain or cable on the front for pulling.

We finally got one shed full. It's 1.38 cords by the calculator on here. 93"x61"x54". When the rain moves out I've got a big fan to out in it and help speed the drying.

This is the way we move it with the FEL, when we hook it up to the counter weight, I'll post pics then.

Some nice red oak we split today.
Got another 1/2 cord of red and white oak done today thanks to the Missus.
We were cleaning up old bark around the splitter and rack when we found about 6 or 8 like this, if I didn't have to come to work this evening, I would have taken him to the creek and washed him off...;)

We have been working on it in the mornings some, before it gets extremely hot. We have seen the high of 120° heat index the other day, was working on the lawn mower and cutting grass. The cooler and I have become best friends...:handshake:...

A man with a couple horses was using a dray to pull wood out. That was summer. Seemed to work well for him.

I've never worked with horses but have worked in the same woods where horses were used for skidding. Yes, with a dray.

Started digging out some of our older logs that were cut 2-23-17. Moisture is about 30-35%in the middle. Nice white oak fatties, haven't gotten the butt cut out yet. Us Backwoods Savage and Steve Burns Wood figured out if ya don't have a log lift, stand that beam up......:D... turning out some pretty wood. I had split 3 or 4 rounds when I took the picture of what's left of the 3 logs that we cut today..:saw::saw:

And talking about heavy, our tractor with the forks on would barely pick them up, about 7-9 ft long.

Oh yeah. My tractor probably would not like them at all either.

That's why I used the forks on the loader, instead of log tongs and chain on bucket... didn't have to get off tractor and hook up.......I did find this one below my house while mowing some tall weeds. Couldn't find the end of it's tail, probably 5- 5'6" long...my shoe is at least a FOOT long... :rofl: :rofl:
