I don't know guys, just my experience between two different 460s.

I'd imagine you have to upgrade the stock oiler to run a big bar like that?

Stihl lists the 460 up to a 32" from the factory. Doubt they would want to you to run it with something different.

Is it faster and more agile with a 24" and under? Absolutely. But it can handle a 28"-32" as well.

I've found the Stihl oilers don't seem to oil enough, reason I was asking about oil with a big bar.

I've burned up a few 18" bars on the 460 and the 660 seems to oil even worse.

Have the oiler all the way up on my saws and its barely enough. Bar gets pretty hot after cutting for a while.
I started mixing some diesel in the bar oil to thin it and that seems to helps a bit. Like a cup or so of diesel to a gallon of bar oil.

I have no idea how mastermech set up the oiler on my 460 but my my chain seems to have enough oil. Wonder if yours partially plugged or something.

To the best of my knowledge, that oiler is the stock oiler for a flush handled MS460. I set them to max output and left it.

As you are discovering, the viscosity of the oil has a lot to do with oiling performance, but you are also right that Stihl is a bit stingy with the oil to begin with. Stihl does have high-output oilers for both the MS460 and the MS660, they were standard equipment on the wrap-handled versions. (MS460R and the 660R)

It has been posted here a few times that Canola oil purchased in bulk works well and is cheap. I dunno if the cheap part holds true for you up there in Alaska but might be worth checking out? I have yet to try it myself but I have had much better results with lower viscosity oils as the temp falls under 40 Deg F .

A little heat in the bar ain't a bad thing either. If the oil isn't smoking off it, no problem really.

It won't ever go on there. I got it since it was a good deal with the 24" in case I get a 261 ported. I can use the 24" on the 460 to run the beam machine. I have ran the 28" on the 460 with an 8 pin. They'll pull it surprisingly well when ported. I may make the 28" fit the 394 since I have an 088 on the way now. I have a 32" and 36" for them.
