I did an experiment with some white birch. I kept a good amount in the house for decorating the stove area when not burning. Most were 3" branch size with bark on.

For 2 years it was kept inside. I decided to burn some of it since I had so much. Ends were dry and cracked but once I started burning it this fall it was still very wet.

I stopped burning it because it made such a mess to the stove window and hissed so much.

That bark is amazing at keeping moisture in. Hey if I didnt know better you could use it to build boats and canoes. :)

I noticed on that chart there's a column for sparks, never gave it much thought until this week when I threw in a few splits of some type of softwood (maybe hemlock of some type) for a couple of loads and it sparked like crazy, I thought for a minute I had some unseasoned wood then I remembered I brought in a load of the soft stuff for the warmer days. I c/s/s two years ago and didn't burn much of it last year. I'm going to try and burn all my 16" wood in the next two years and go to strictly 21".

I love me some white Birch. Not the best but I'll grab it any time its available. I cut a lot of it for my mom on her property, she has a lot of large stuff that is dying. Anyone familiar with Chaga? I just learned about it last weekend.

THe one I see had a distinct thud to it when I hit it with my maul but that doesn't mean it's not going to be rotten by the time I get to it. And I've been clearing that area up pretty nice now, could probably comfortably put 4-5 chord in there loosely stacked, more if I tightened the stacks up but I like the extra air flow.
