    Ohhhh yeah buddy.

Bottom line, the shells are a waste product that must be disposed of quickly during processing of the nut crop.

They have few uses as well.
Ground cover in place of bark dust (Cats hate digging in the stuff)

The plant does not spend any real extra time handling it either.
The stuff goes to the huge hopper outside the plant and is hauled away daily.

When stuff is purposely manufactured or repeatedly handled to make it useful, the the $$$$ goes up.

Most folks will not go to the trouble to haul this stuff, as it's not bagged or otherwise packaged, plus the stoves need tweaking a bit to run the stuff, and the extra cleaning regimen required to keep the stoves happy.

Not to mention, not all stove will feed the shells (Quads with the spring auger will not)

Yeah just googled it and there is only 60 tonnes of hazelnuts produced in Australia a year, so no good for us. We have mountains of almonds but the ash level is real high.
The hazelnuts must be low ash? Usually shells are a bust for ash...

About 2-3 times what wood pellets are.

No worries, just clean more often.
When I can heat a 2400 sq ft house for under $100 a season I can clean a lot of ash

Oregon is one of the largest producers of hazelnuts in the world.

The Willamette Valley where we are grows huge quantities of them.

The shells are a big waste product that they must get rid of.
