The one way it seems to spread is from the seeds. From my original two 4' X 8' beds, I have 6 new crowns scattered here and there in my garden area, with more expected. If the plants end up in a bad place I just dig them out. I know some folks say the male plants are more desired for size. That may be true, but I like a variety of different sized spears anyways, and the ones I pick are pretty good sized anyways from both sexes.
I'm putting in another asparagus bed. I kilt mine two winters ago. Pacific Purple from Territorial Seed. $40 for 25 2yr old crowns. Got jalapenos/bells/romas and Thai basil going. This year no grow lights. These are sitting in the sun by the sundeck door. As soon as I transplant them.... into the green house. Everything else is a couple of weeks off. I will just start them...in....the green house.
Now....will each one of those require a transplant into a pot? ...or do the grow in those and then outside?
Most will go directly out. The others like tomatoees will get put into the larger 2 inch blocks and then go out. We aren't using any containers for potting
I'm lov'n this greenhouse. Moved all my starts out today. Potted the Roma tomatoes. Took out one box of crappy dirt and replaced it w/potting soil. I stumbled onto a source of free potting soil. Sweet. Picking vine ripe tomatoes in March. Sweet. Even the third generation Pink Ladys have tomatoes on them and they haven't even made into their buckets yet. It's the light from these panels. Has to be. I was going take some pics of the strawberries I had....but either the squirrels or rabbits came in during the day when the door was open... and ate them all. Got all the fruit trees pruned and limbs chipped this week. Spring is here. Life is good.
They are. We had the first ones last week and were shocked how good. Not going to be buying anything in the store right now to like this.
What a cool set-up justdraftn Thanks for sharing! I got started on my ‘19 garden today. I can’t hardly wait for the fresh salad greens.
I tried buckets last year and they did alright but I started them too late and I didn't get very big potatoes. This year I started some potatoes early in small pots and will transplant them into the bigger pots in a couple of weeks . Potatoes in the black pots on the far right. Some lettuce in the unheated greenhouse: some warmer weather stuff started indoors: Some that come in at night: The peas in the black and brown packs are basically germination tests for the seeds that have been planted in the ground outside already. If they all sprout at 70ºF then the ones in cooler soil outdoors shouldn't be too far behind. Some are dwarf peas that will be going into 5 gallon buckets leaving room in the center for a dwarf tiny tim tomato plant. Hopefully the peas will be done when the tomato needs the room. I'm also trying starting peas in gutters this year for an early start. They're just starting to pop out of their soil beds today.
Got some of the garden plowed today. This will be for pumpkins and sweet corn and maybe some early zucchini. Gonna be a bit till planting time here.
I got three more tomato buckets put together today. Transplanted 6, 3rd generation Pink Ladys…... after I got the go-ahead from quality control inspector....of course..... These are going to go outside when it is warm enough. ..and, while poking around the garden, found 5 strawberries that survived the winter... so, I moved them to the strawberry pot in the green house. Hoping they will take off like the two that have been in there all winter.
