Purchased a Bonnie's German Thyme plant last year from a big box. I put the plant in a bucket and let it go all winter. I thought the plant died since temps below zero were not uncommon. This spring the plant looked dried out and terrible. To my surprise, I was getting ready to get rid of the plant today and there are tiny branches coming back to life. The little guy will get a replanting sometime this week. Thought I would mention this to others who may consider planting this herb. The GT seems to be pretty dang hardy here in zone 5.
Thyme is a really hardy herb it will survive in the ground up into southern Maine, just takes a bit to come back to life as you've realized DB
Got 4 bell pepper plants last night and need to plant them today. Hope to get a lot of them this year because I hate paying high prices for them in the store.
Cukes are 'hardening' by bringing them outside during the day only. Then this happened. Why? Tomatoes haven't been outdoors, but are starting to get limp and scraggly. Why? I only water when the soil starts to feel dry at the surface. I might have to stick with just murdering trees as I suck at this growing stuff thing.
Those cukes might be getting root bound. Try transplanting a few into some dixie cups with a hole drilled in the bottom. They look a little dry too.
Gardens are done but looking pretty dang cool the next few nights then warming up with quite abit a rain next week?
Got all the taters hilled and stakes driven for maters and peppers last night. Ran way short on stakes...need to make some more.
Cant do much about this!! Frost Advisory Issued at 14:01 Friday 22 May 2015 Summary Frost may destroy fruit crops, vegetables, and other plants. Wide spread frost is expected. Under clear skies and calm winds, ground temperatures overnight and early Saturday morning are expected to be at or a few degrees below freezing. The exception is for areas very close to the Great Lakes where temperatures will remain a couple of degrees above freezing. Take preventative measures to protect frost-sensitive plants and trees. Weather Advisories for Frost are issued when temperatures are expected to reach the freezing mark during the growing season, leading to potential damage and destruction to plants and crops. Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports to #ONStorm.
This... Plus these.... Will = Lovely Wifes new raised bed gardens! Getting a late start, but weather conditions haven't allowed us to get going on them.
Craig your cukes are getting too much sun all at once - kind of tall for a six pack. The succulents like cukes, squash, pumpkins etc. start a lot easier in the peat type 8-pack trays just plant the whole thing. It looks like the seeds may have been planted too deep (fingernail depression and pour 3-4 per plant cover and soak in) Once the plant sprouts it's two first leaves it's time to start hardening off. Cukes and squashes need to be stunted(temps 50F+) with early morning sun and no afternoon direct sunlight until they have the second set of leaves(the one's with edges) it also helps to keep them tight together, less evaporation and the plants will be shorter and stockier. Worst case plant them now and throw a couple more seeds in each hole and you'll have new seedlings in 1-2weeks Your tomatoes need sunlight & humidity same thing a spot with early morning light and shade past noon, they'll need to be watered daily light shower over the top.
basod yup, you nailed it. I googled it this morning after they all fell over and had white stems - "sun burnt" Cukes are toast, will direct sow this weekend some new seeds.
just sow them 1/2" below soil with a handful of potting mix, you should be past frost down south there
Minus 1c right now and the garage roof is looking a little white. A lot of the potted plants were brought up to the house yesterday but all the stuff that was planted in the gardens had to fend for themselves. Will go out in a bit to see whats what?
Went out and had a look and its already up to +5c and all the little plants look fine now farmhand? May not know for sure for awhile though?
