Got all my early stuff, except for onions, in before the rain hit this week. Hopefully I can get the onions in this weekend but I doubt it.
Yea got the idea from hugel, plus a bunch of brush to get rid of and don't feel like burning it for once. I got a tractor to do the dirt work with. Granted kind of counter productive at first with the compaction, but i think over time it will be worth it.
You know, I would have to give that one a lot of thought. Decomposing wood, leaves etc. ties up nitrogen and does not release it back until they have completed being composted. I suppose if you plant crops like peas and beans that fix nitrogen from the air, you could be OK but otherwise keep an eye for yellowing leaves, slow growth etc. be prepared to soil test to make sure your investment is working for you. I've been around gardening for many years. That is a new concept for me. We are short season so the active composting time is limited. I have seen limbs that size buried and still there several years later.
WOOOHOOO! Got my seed order from Burgess yesterday. I was about ready to call them. Ordered seeds only,,,, a month ago. I thought they were waiting to ship them with my bulb order from December. First time ordering from them. A few days ago I checked reviews of the company. Wasn't impressed ,,, but reviews are opinions . Nothing like right down to the wire on timing. I wanted the maters in dirt by this weekend. Another few weeks and I'll be looking for that bulb order. Any other year I could be planting them now. This year the ground is concrete right now!
I ordered my corn seed from Gurneys last night. I was going to also order seed potatoes, but they wanted $12.99 for 2 pounds. Heck with that, I'll just pick some up at southern states this weekend. Last spring I made raised garden boxes behind the retaining wall in unused space. We got good potato yield from the top box, so this year, all the boxes will be potatoes.
Nice. Half of my 15 acres is on a hillside especially where the house is located. The other half is developed for my business. I neeed to keep garden stuff close to the house or it disappears. Our deer and bear population is unreal. I've been considering some tiered gardening in some unusable space.
Under the 2" of thawed ground, we still have a solid block of ice. With daytime highs in the 40's and lows in the 20's, it's going to be another month until I can work the ground.
Guess she has to put a bunch in bigger pots already. And my hot peppers are up about an inch except a few that friggen 'Squish' the cat mangled...
Got my seed rack yesterday, and put it together. I goofed and used 2 of the stretchers at the top, but the wife likes that high top shelf there, so now I need 2 more for the center supports. Might try some 1/2" PVC or CPVC.
I guess if we put long cookie trays on there front to back, I don't really need the center supports. Hmmmm. Problem. How do I make cookies if my cookie sheets are on the seed rack? Oh, what a tangled web..........
