I used to tie a couple leaves together to keep the sun off of it. The white ones would get a sun burn. I've given up on anything that the cabbage loopers like. They're just really bad here.
I had no idea I wasn't getting white. The Mennonite place I bought just labeled it Broc. Thanks. Do you do the same for cauliflower?
Another layer of clippings around my peppers. Plants aren’t thriving. Maybe it’s just too wet? Tomatoes doing decent. Brussels doing ok. They are a late season thriver but the place sells plants early. Fingers crossed as they don’t like the extreme heat of summer.
I've never worried about broccoli florets, just cauliflower turning brown and getting tough in the sun. There's a number of ways to keep the sun off the fruity prize, the easiest is just to pull/bend up enough leaves and tie/hold in place like a little sunbrella. Intense Summer sun will turn that tender fuit into a piece of leather in just a couple of days.
So......... is it broccoli or cauliflower???? Looking good no matter which it is. I have tried the grass clippings approach this year around my tomato plants and have run into much criticism/protest from 99 lbs Neither of us are "professional gardeners" nor did we stay at holiday inn last night.
Ha, not sure yet. That very well could be the cauliflower. I planted 4 of each. I plan to cover with leaves this evening. Clippings have worked great for me. If a weed sprouts up, it just pulls with little to no resistance. My maters aren’t looking typical to this point. Not sure if variety or conditions. It’s been crazy wet here, May was a washout.
Brussels are thriving due to the low temps here. I think today’s high was 64. Complete overcast and rainy. This will be second cutting of my lettuce. Fresh salads are becoming regular. Cabbage leaf caught some water. Peepers are coming around.
