Groundhogs are climbers when they want to be. Ive seen them over 10' in a tree already.

Made some blueberry jam yesterday, barely had enough for the batch I made. Hasn't set the way I wanted it to.

But it sure is good!


Some sort of insect eating the leaves of my green beans.

 

Picked the blackberries twice today. 2 gallons this AM and 1 gallon this PM.

 

About 2.5 more gallons today. Sick of picking them and they are only half done for the year.

 

Picked my first corn today.

 

Very nice. Which tomato varieties did you grow?

 

I don't know about everyone else, but I tried the "grow nasturtiums with my cucurbits" method to keep the cucumber beetles away...didn't work.

They still got everything except the pumpkins (drenched them with Macho 2.0 but we don't eat them anyway). Everything is still technically alive with the cucumbers surprisingly doing the best. But I ended up replanting more earlier this month to hopefully grow and produce before frost.

For anyone interested, the nasturtiums just go crazy... they take over, rob nutrients, restrict airflow and pruning access, get in the way of where your plants want to grow, etc. I just don't see any benefit in companion planting with them.

I have had GREAT luck with growing basil right next to tomatoes. No bugs that I've seen so far. And basil smells wonderful.

Corn was in fact good! Much more coming as some of the stalks grew into 3 separate stems.

 

I think this cucumber is a male. Though it may have peyronie's disease.

 

Biddleman did you catch any of that storm last evening? We got absolutely dumped on. Couple stalks of my young corn were blown over. I straighten and propped up with grass clippings. Should be ok but man, had to be 1.5” of rain in 30 minutes. I’ll be drying out my basement for a few days. Betting my tomatoes will be splitting open too.

 

Yeah had that storm but not too bad for us. We also got hit Thursday night. Was about an inch of rain in 30 minutes from that one. We needed some rain but not all at once. Seems of late it will be raining literally 1/2 mile from our house, and we are dry. Looking like more storms are building this afternoon.

I didn’t even get to the orange cherry size plant.

Watermelon and sweet potato plants are taking over the garden now.

 

Its fun letting a couple rogue tomato plants grow each year just to see what I end up with. These are a weird hybrid between a yellow pear and… something larger LOL. I can’t remember if I grew yellow pear last year or the year before. Anyway these are pretty tasty so I think I’ll save a few seeds and grow them on purpose next time (unless they’re further hybridized by then)

 

I made a last minute decision sometime back in June when I was cooking a store-bought butternut squash at dinner. I tossed a couple seeds into this mixed raised bed. Even if I only get half a dozen from the 2 plants, I’ll be a happy camper. At least the winter squash keeps for a while.

 

I've never had any luck with "pairing" vegetables that are "supposed to pair well".
I'll plant marigolds in the garden to attract bees as not too many bugs or animals like them, but not too close to anything.

My garden is a bust again this year. Rabbits, groundhog and deer have made it past my fences. The guy with the apple orchard down the street says the deer are jumping his 10 foot fences. They're even eating his mums, which he has never needed a fence around. He's had to buy apples wholesale to keep his roadside stand open due to the May freeze.
