    the only radish seeds I could buy was a variety called China Rose big radishes and really hot when eaten raw. I sliced them, saute them and the heat disappeared.

    These are Cherry Belle. The ones I started early, with the days getting longer had a high bolt incidence. These grown in the (unusually long) heat of Summer had no incidence of bolting even when I left three of them to see what would happen. They're only growing in a 5 or 6 inch deep pot too. I had another kind of radish in the early Spring (also wanted to bolt) that got quite woody if the bulbs got over about an inch .

    So, I thought this was a squash, but now I have doubts. Squash or gourd? My mom gave me a started plant, and said it was a zucchini or squash. Clearly she didn't know.

    Ok, looks like it is yellow crookneck summer squash. I think we'll chunk it up and roast it.

    I think I'll try this recipe. It sounds like you don't need to peel the skin on these yellow squash.

    Apparently they don't need to be peeled, the yellow summer squash that is.

    Yeah, generally one doesn't peel summer squash or zucchini.
    Both can be fairly damaged looking/banged up in the grocery store as the soft skin doesn't take handling well.

    Dunno about the genetics of that thing with warts though.

    It's the same as the smooth skinned yellow crookneck summer squash, but I let it grow a little longer thinking it would get bigger

    Found a few peppers today. Not as big as earlier. Stihl been runnin water to them though.

    Pulled all the tomatoes that were even starting to blush last evening. Supposed to get in the mid 30's for a low so figured it was time.

    These guys have a nice selection of all the out of the ordinary varieties. I still get some of my seeds from Home Depot for the more generic varieties, but I like to get adventurous and see what else is out there from around the world.

    Sorry, no likes from me on the radishes.. :confused: Are they an acquired taste cuz I never liked em as long as I can remember.


    Tomatoes have started to wither but we’re still getting them. The two cherry size really put out this year. And the peppers are still going. Picked one melon too. Not the big one.

    Anyone overwinter pepper plants on here? I did for the first time last year with a Thai hot plant and had so-so results. I had dug it up in mid-October right before the frost hit, pruned it down to the stalk and left it in the basement with a grow light. It went back outdoors this May and started producing pods around the same time as all the plants I started from seed back in March did. I didn't gain anything time-wise like I hoped. Not only that, but having to watch over the plant all winter long became a pain in the neck.

    Picked 31 Winter squash that were pretty much ready to harvest. 10 or 15 that are still green or green-ish.

    One or two probably could have stayed a couple more days in the sun but I've got too many deer helping themselves to things.
    They're bad this year. They're even eating pine trees. Not just sampling like they do browsing , eating all the new growth. They've figured out I didn't do such a good job stabbing T-posts in the parched hard as a rock ground and just push them over. No short cuts or half-azzed jobs with this crew.

    I like music and Spanish roja for hard neck. You could probably grow some soft neck varieties down there.

    Maybe check "Hollis and Nancy's Homestead" on Youtube. They are in FLA and grow a lot of food.
