That's the prettiest broccoli I've ever seen! I miss cool season crops, we just go from winter into summer.
July 17 last year was my first tomato eaten out of garden . This year aint happenin ! Lots of matters but no where near ripe. July 5th last year was first cuke and I'll be lucky if I have them ready in 2-3 weeks this year. I got stuff in early this year because of the hot house and weve had a warm/hot/wet spring summer so far. WTF ?! On the other hand we've been putting down lettuce spinach and zucchini like no ones bidness. You can dam near sit in a lawn chair with a 6 pack and watch zucchs grow to pickable size before you finish the 3rd beer!!!!!
I know what you mean about the squash. I have butternut coming in, never seen anything so prolific. Funny, that 'mater I et las week--the rest have just been sitting there green, not a tinge of pink forming on any of them. I bet I get them all at once! Peppers are growing good now, but the branches are so heavy some are breaking off before the fruits get big enough. I think next year I will put cages around them. Beans (replanted late) are finally getting purple blossoms!! Should have some next week.
First planting of sweet corn is within a week of being ready. Got some softball sized cantaloupe and 'maters. I should have about 50 butternut squash. Picking peppers, green beans, zucs, and cucs like they are going out of style.
I'm getting about a quart of cherry tomatoes a day. I can't wait for that first 'mater sammich. Last night we had a fire going outside on the pit and I grilled some toast for the kids. I'm totally having a beefsteak tomato sandwich...on grilled toast...salt, pepper, mayo. It doesn't get much better than that, folks.
I've got a million cukes all 1"-2" and chit-tons of blossoms. Vines are 3-4' up trellis already. I honestly cant believe they aren't ready with the ideal growing weather we've had since about May 10. I never even transplanted these. Started them in the hot house . Took the lids off 1st week of June and rigged up a trellis in the hot house. Trans planting usually sets them back but they didn't get that ill treatment. ! ?????? Should be eating them now!!!
Emptied last years salmon compost into trailer & wheel barrow: Making some Salmon flavored compost today : 3 layers Buried with compost & grass:
Yep. Lol. Sprayed again last night. Woke up to rain this morning. On the plus side, my eggplants are coming around.
In the fall when I was a kid mom would tell us to bring home carp from fishing in the river to "plant" in the garden. Didn't make sense then. We just did it.
advantage 7.5 inches of rain from Hurricane Arthur ? That's where the hornpout and perch we brought home ended up too. Course we didn't find out until years later that mom made a substitution and hornpout and perch don't taste anything like codfish.
Wow, nice. I've tried onions a few times. They grow nice tops, get huge seed heads, turn brown when the heat comes but the onions are the same size as when the sets were planted.
I didn't really do to much to them this year, but they grew exceptional. They never even went to seed, which is a first for me.... When you plant your plants do you plant deep or shallow? Bulbs or greens? Keep them fairly shallow and as they mature run your finger around the base to keep it losen for them to expand and grow....
Shallow, half inch onion sets. I have nice dirt. When we grew potatoes years ago you could reach right into the loose soil, find a good size potato and take it without digging everything up. I have grown onions a very long time ago and maybe the weather cooperated. Maybe I had a better source for onion sets. Seems to me they were more heat resistant and stayed green all Summer, but I could be mis-remembering. I could be wrong but we can't grow spinach easily here because Spring is so short also. It bolts before it matures, looks awful and tastes like it looks. I think onions need spinach weather.
