Wondering if anyone has had experience with garage door openers. I have two single garage doors. One has an opener and the other does not, but I'd like to add one.

My problem is I have a beam going across the middle of my garage so the length from the door to the beam is too short for all the opener/rails out there. Genie and Chamberlain claim you can cut but really provide not much information. Genie only supports and recommends cutting a screw drive opener system. I found some references to this online but nobody ever mentions how to cut or adjust the screw drive system when cutting the rail?

My existing opener is a older Craftsman chain opener and had to have been cut or rigged in someway to work. Just wanted to see if anyone had run into this or had experience with doing this? Want to try and gather as much information as I can before I purchase and starting hacking up a $ garage door opener. Thanks fellas!

These aren't very good ones at telling the whole story but I'll post anyways. I'll try and get better ones tonight.

Yep saw this, thank you! Doesn't sound too difficult but wanted to pick anyone's brain who has more experience with them. Thanks!

Even better, consider this style opener instead:

Liftmaster 8500. It spins a jack shaft to lift the door instead of the traditional overhead style. With your setup and space being tight this would be the way to go.

Saw this but the price point is killing me. Cheapest I've seen was $400.......But your right this is the easiest way to go.

Time and frustration vs money. Sometimes biting the bullet is worth it. But of course we all know it depends on the exact circumstances.

ReelFaster did you end up getting an opener on the other side?

Now it's our turn for trouble, the belt on our 2014 Craftsman is wonky. Hopefully we can look at it this weekend.

I did not! I was all gun ho on it, made several calls to Chamberlain which has some really good customer service and figured out which model would be best but just never pulled the trigger. I think I was told to go with a chain model which was easier to cut the chain and rail to make it fit. Curious to see what someone would charge to replace the one as its an older craftsman that sounds like its hurting (prob needs some lubrication, chain adjustment) and add the new one.
