Hey Standish, ye have to know what you ( thy ) don't know (e.g. pouring foundation slab, construction, astro physics, love,.... ). Do people from Mass/NH actually use thy ?
I recommend for roofs and for spaces with a proper ERV EDPM. EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene monomer (M-class) rubber), a type of synthetic rubber, is a group of elastomers with outstanding resistance to heat, ozone, weathering, hot water, steam, washing agents and polar organic solvents.
Seeing as it is still intermission... I grew up on the Maine coast (more down, less east). We moved to Colorado for a few years. Right off I noticed they gave directions to places a bit different, usually in terms of N, E, S, or W, due to the gridded roads. I was ok with all that but something seemed odd. I finally realized it was “east”. Where I grew up no one drove any real distance east. SmokeyTheBear, I spent a year or so renting in a house on Clay Rd, just off 25.
Now I understand when you mentioned buying a washing machine or dryer near me, sorry, I thought you may have been confusing a Wyoming city or county "somewhere out east" ( hee hee on the directions to the place). Where were you in Colorado? Took me forever after moving here to get my sense of direction, 43 years it was west=mountains. Here, we are next to a hogback/foothill and there are mountains off to the east but I have my bearings now. I was in Los Angeles once, unbelievably lost beyond all lost. And yes, I was raised direction to places are n, e, w, s, along with landmarks.
We started out north of Windsor (WCR 74), then over near Gill, and then bought a place east of Galeton (back on WCR 74). Went out west for just a couple of years of school, came back 13 years later. We loved it out there, but wanted to raise the kids closer to family. A relative just gave my wife a printed copy of an email she had sent to them back then, describing a trip to Centennial Livestock Auction (and briefly losing our youngest only to find her out on the catwalk above the yard). Before we moved back we bought a F250 from a ranch up near Chugwater that we found through The Fencepost - lots of good memories.
What a small world, I know that area out east And drove by the auction site on the interstate and Mulberry daily. So glad your kiddo didn't go to far. Guessing you've been through high wind blizzards like we just had out east there. The Fencepost was one of my customers too briefly. At that time the office was west of the auction a intersections. had to add in some n, s, w, e references
I be Downeast. You be.................. Standish and (West ) Gorham are Downeast ..... like being ALMOST PREGNANT. It is true happy St Patrick's Day however.
Here in VT you are a “Vermonter” only if you were born here, but it doesn’t get taken away when you live somewhere else. Likewise I identify as a Mainer despite not living there for many, many years. So as a card carrying Mainer, I vote he is well within his rights to identify as a downeaster. But I would agree that anyone who thinks Standish itself is remotely like downeast needs to be spoken to!
Back on garage talk, I’m following this because I hope to be building a sugarhouse this summer, and am wanting to make part of one barn a bit more freespan for mucking out with a tractor.
Nobody even suggested that Standish or West Gorham was DownEast Maine, although by definition they are both DownEast and compared to my hometown MDI isn't either Downeast or even east. Yes, I am a native Mainer. The only place that is east of my hometown is, are you ready for this, West Quoddy Head Lubec.
Back ( at last ) to the OP.... The decision talking to home contractors is to do stick built on slab. Now just have to wait for the real Downeast snow/ice to go and the ground to thaw for fill. So far plans are for a 24x28 2 car garage, rear and upper floor storage ( self propelled HD brush cutter, 2 splitters, pressure washer, Honda Foreman, plus hanging and shelf room in the rear). No insulation, 2x4's, shingled, 9-10 pitch. Comments ?
This area, also known as "Down East Maine" or "Downeast Maine", lies on the coast roughly between the Penobscot River and the border, including rural Hancock and Washington counties and the towns of Bar Harbor, Machias, Jonesport, and Eastport.
Technically, it is anyplace EAST of the reference point which is normally BOSTON, MA. The term means to sail east and down wind. Now this old guy who was born in Eastport woudn't have a clue.
You will likely have a roof snow/ice weight issue check with ironpony as he has the proper certs, seal, and load tables being he is a registered PE. My two car garage in the city had a center support.
