Passed by a small patch of trees this morning while working. Looked around and saw a lot of down ash with a few box elders mixed in. So I went to the nearest farmhouse and ask who owned the property. They said they did, so I asked if they wouldn't mind if I went in there and cut up some of the dead fall. They said, "Sure, just not during hunting season. " I said I would never do that, said thank you. And drove away. This patch of trees is about 250 feet wide and 1000 feet long. Mostly ash, I can't believe it!! This is a picture of the short side. Its about 15 miles from my house.
So my oldest son and I decided to take off to this patch of trees with the chainsaw and see what we could find in there. We didn't spend much time there but found some good living but fallen over ash trees. This is something I think we can keep coming back to over and over again. Here is a couple pictures from inside the shelter belt. This was the one we went after. What the heck am I going to do now.. Yes, that is both of my bars and chains stuck in this tree. Not the best picture, but shows us with the little bit we cut in the truck bed behind. All in all a great couple hours spent with my boy!
Looks like a great time with your son! I look forward to times like that when my son is older. Nice looking, solid ash too. Ash is my absolute favorite PS - I’ve used the Jack in my truck to lift the tension off of bars in the past (the tire changing Jack). As long as you can squeeze it under the tree, they do a good job of easing the tension.
Excellent! Never be afraid to ask a landowner permission to take dead wood. Worst they can do is say "no", and that's no harm, no foul.
Should give you a great supply of wood, and keep on giving over the years. Hope you got your saws out.
