You aren’t kidding that the cold motivates to get out and get physical. Hand split on Sunday for the first time in 2 years and it felt great. It was easy splitting oak but still feeling good to get back to swinging the axe. Everything I’ve been getting lately requires hydraulics so this was a nice change. Made this pile in about a hour, was definitely a good workout.
Nope. Been waiting for nice temps as well. Only problem is I split nearly everything I had cut this past weekend. Was a great weekend for working outside. I've got to get some more wood off the hill, but our shotgun/rifle season for deer starts on Saturday. Fill the freezer, then the stove.
It's in the back of my mind. I'll watch the Black Friday sales, but I may not get one until spring, or if I get a big amount of wood all at once. I have about a cord and a half of black locust rounds, halves, and quarters that are a year old. They have toughened up since they were green. I don't intend on splitting those by hand.
have you ever tried an electric splitter ? they are inexpensive ,easy to store and maintain ,i was surprised by them much more powerful than i thought ,just an idea good luck in your search
Stoveaclaus is not ok. I have not done any woodsmanship in a while. I watch my students work all day, but I have no time to do any work myself.
Maybe there's a place nearby, that you could rent an electric splitter first a day. Good way to give one a try for short money. Maybe a place that rents power equipment, would have one.
Stoveaclaus teaches woodworking. He also has a couple elves every year that enjoy splitting old 2x4's into perfect kindling. ASNR!!!
