So now the other side of noodling that Dave did not touch on. Noodling is a foolish way to use your chainsaw! Personally I have never noodled nor do I ever plan on doing it.

But Chvymn99 has seen the light...ask him what he drives now...
I agree and disagree here...I don't like to noodle because it is needless wear n tear on the saw...and wastes a bit of wood (unless you save and use the noodles) but if I were going to pick up just a few big rounds off site and had to choose between dragging the splitter along and noodling a few rounds, Ima noodling...actually, I'd try to split it into quarters by hand first, if that didn't work I'd cut a cheater slot in the round to start a wedge in...then, if that didn't work...a noodling we will go, a noodling we will go! :D
Now if I were picking up a bunch of large rounds off site, then I might go to the trouble of taking the splitter along...

Welcome to the site Nick&Lissa As others have said, there is no such thing as a dumb question. As you are finding out there can be many different answers to the same questions. We all learn from each other and adapt to fit our own situation.
We would love to see the wood Nick is working on and also the stove you burn the wood in. We love pics.:ithappened::ithappened::ithappened::saw::tree::axe::stacker:
What part of Indiana are you now calling home?

Ok, so today my back was killing me "but" so was looking at that oak sitting in my yard, so I took 5 Motrin a Miller lite and went to work!!! Got about a good 1/2 +- cord split until I couldn't do it any more, had to stop for a refill. :coldone: Now comes the muscle relaxer, shower and dinner:stirpot:. Oh, some pics of the nails in the wood. The best guess I got is they were nailed in the tree about 80 years ago from my best count.

If one does not have a hydro splitter, then noodling is about the only option for those gnarly crotch pieces.
